Tiny fandom fics

Tiny fandoms time! (At least the database is perfect for that right now, since those are what I started with.) I've rec'd some of these in earlier posts but I'm starting to lose track of which, lol, other than I know I've rec'd all the ones under 1k and over 50k, so I'll eliminate those here and just show the ones in between, which is a lot of them. I'm defining "tiny" as Yuletide-eligible, which technically includes Matrix fic at this point, I believe. (A bit of a loophole, that, but it's not the only one, at least.) I also eliminated any WIPs (as I did with the over 50k post) because I know a lot of people who don't like reading anything that's not complete (especially if there's little to no chance of it being finished).

Again, ratings from Fanfiction.net were translated into G to R, and ratings from AO3 were translated into PG to X (which was shorter than NC-17). Anything not rated on AO3 or other sites is marked Unrated. I'll try to give warnings if there's anything that would fall under the big four AO3 warnings, and any ships.

I don't promise that all of these are necessarily the best-written (though many are!), just that they have something about them that I've really enjoyed, and hopefully you will find the same thing in some of them. :)

Henry is a card sharp who donates most of his winnings to orphanages. When the casinos become suspicious of his good luck, he hires his friend Max, a make up artist, to create elaborate disguises for him.

That's all you need to know to follow this fun story in which our heroes have to fake a relationship to deflect the attention of the mob. The author has an uncanny ability to imitate Roald Dahl's narrative voice, and it makes such a satisfying slashy sequel to canon.

The Lost World - Arthur Conan Doyle, Edward Malone/John Roxton

After their adventures in South America, Ned visits Lord John at home and finds what he's been looking for all along. I love the gorgeous, vivid descriptions in this, and the author has a really deft touch with dialogue, packing a lot into a few words.

If you've seen the film: please enjoy this wonderful fix-it for the terrible, no good, very bad canon ending. If you haven't seen the film: please enjoy this story of a woman saving the life of the man she's been in love with for decades and then riding off with him into the sunset.

Major Arcana XXII and XXII by CorpseBrigadier
Rosencrantz & Guildenstern are Dead – Stoppard

A seriously gorgeous piece of art that imagines Rosencrantz and Guildenstern as tarot cards. I loved the way it plays with probability in the style of canon, and there are so many insightful little details – check out the cool skull coins at the bottom of each card.

This is both a delightfully meta romp through several of the poems and a really sharp critique of the gender roles and other societal restrictions in them. I love the process by which Mrs. Dupree recovers different pieces of her name and starts setting boundaries.

Matrix fics over 50k

My fic database is full of mainly tiny fandoms so far (which I'll get to in another post for the tiny fandoms theme), but The Matrix is not exactly tiny, even if it's eligible for Yuletide (that's only due to Fanfiction.net's late addition of the complete/in progress option, which many of the early writers never went back to change their fics to "complete"). And, coincidentally, it's the only fandom with fics over 50k in there so far. I would love to link to the many, many other wonderful long fics I've read over the years (in so many different fandoms) but to find all the links would be a tremendous effort right now, so I'll stick with these four.

Same rating system as I explained in the post last week; all of these are either ff.n fics (which were given ratings from G to R) or from a site that didn't have a rating, in which case it's marked Unrated.

These I can talk a bit more about. :)

Lady Rheena - Rescue Run
R, 68054 words
This is a most unusual Matrix fic as it actually features no scenes in the Matrix itself, instead focusing on an OC who comes from outside of Earth itself. (What if humans had colonized other planets before losing Earth to the machines?) A much more sci-fi/space style fic than one might expect for Matrix fic! Sparks/OC ship.

Phoenix (The Woman in Red) - Rising from the Ashes
Unrated, 287098 words
You'll need to use the Wayback Machine to read this one, but it's the longest Matrix fic I've seen yet and is quite entertaining. Full of interesting worldbuilding, it ignores the 2nd and 3rd films entirely and posits a very different (yet somewhat plausible) approach to the Matrix world. To put in the ships would spoil you majorly, so all I can say is, give it a try? (As far as warnings go, there's plenty of language and marijuana use, though the sex is generally glossed over and there's virtually no violence. There's some original character death but canonical characters are all good.) I spent some time one week creating an epub of the entire thing so I could re-read it more easily (which is the only reason I know the wordcount). :D

Zion Angel - Death and Rebirth

An well-written backstory for Trinity, ending a little before the movie starts.

Zion Angel - Knowing and Walking
PG-13, 100463 words
The sequel to Death and Rebirth, this fic fills around the movie and a little beyond, showing Trinity's struggle to deal with her love for Neo and grief at the loss of her friends (all canonical).

Rectember: Over 50K

In the Shadows of Tall Buildings -- by SorchaR, Kings TV series. Technically it's only over 50,000 words if the whole series is included, but the first story is over 40,000 words, so I hope it's not too much of a cheat. It's David/Jack and takes place after the end of the series. Jack shows up at David's family farm having escaped from Silas house arrest. It goes on from there.

The Fool in the Mirror -- by thepinupchemist, Marvel Film Universe. It's Steve/Bucky. Definitely an AU. It's also A/B/O. It deals with depression and suicidal ideation in Steve Rogers, so heed the warnings. As someone who's worked a suicide hotline, I think it's pretty accurate. It's over 100,000 words.

No Misunderstandings -- by eretria, Marvel Film Universe, Peggy Carter during the war. There's Steve and Bucky, too. Beautifully written and 66,000+ words.

Single Use Weapon -- by Fahye, Kings TV series. Another after the end of the series story. Another David/Jack. It shows Jack in an intriguing light.

Rectember: BTS RPF Works over 50k

6 longer fics for which NO canon knowledge is required. :DDD

* The Romance of Old Clothes by fringecity (Explicit, Yoongi/Taehyung, 59.6k) - Non-Idol AU in which Yoongi is an Art Director, Taehyung is a wardrobe stylist, and they have to collaborate on an important TV project. I really enjoyed the writing, the characterizations, the fact that this was a true Enemies to Frenemies to Lovers fic. It also had a dollop of magical realism that was interwoven into the plot. ALSO, if you like vintage clothing (especially the designer kind) or are interested in fashion at all, then this fic will be a treat.

Oh, and it did something that's a MASSIVE SPOILER in such a skillful way I still <3____<3 when I think abt this story.

* let the light in by sharpa (Teen, Yoongi/Jungkook, 65.6k) - AU in which Jungkook is trying to not fail college while in NYC. Some people have magical powers, some do not. A beautifully written story abt found family, romantic love, and OT7 friendship. Reading this fic gave me COZIEST FEELINGS EVER.

* Fake Sugar by minverse (Explicit, Seokjin/Jungkook, 87.5k) - One of the best things about the Seokjin/Jungkook ship is how GOOD CHAOTIC they can be when they're together. This story does a really good job of showing why Seokjin/Jungkook is a fun ship to check out.

All you need to know is that Seokjin is a competitive eater who ends up getting Jungkook as a fake sugar daddy. It's lolarious from beginning to end with added sexy and sweet moments throughout the story.

* Darling, Just Say You'll Stay by tusaisbts and (Explicit, Yoongi/Jimin, side ships for Taehyung/Hobi and RM/Seokjin, 91.3k) - This fic is set in an Old West AU where homophobia doesn't exist. Jimin travels from NYC to a little city out west to marry a rancher he's never met.

Do you like slow burn? As in actual slow burn? The kind where you're just about to explode because you're 30k in and the MCs are still pining for each other? Then this might be the fic for you. The longing Yoongi and Jimin felt was the best AND worst thing ever.

* Summer Sands by jvante (Explicit, Seokjin/Yoongi that then becomes Seokjin/Yoongi/Jungkook, 94.4k)- Jungkook is a broke college student that, on a whim, decides to join a sugar daddy/sugar baby app. He thinks he's getting catfished when one of the replies is from a v. famous male model...

I really loved the individual dynamics in this story. Since it's pretty long, there was enough time and space for everyone's relationship to get established. It's also hella hot. >:D

* turn up your light by spudcity (Explicit, Yoongi/Jimin, 101.7k) - A fantasy court AU in which Yoongi marries Jimin without any expectations of love. It's supposed to be a strategic marriage...until it becomes something more.

A+ characterization of Jimin (and everyone else, but I really liked the Jimin in this story) plus the way Jimin and Yoongi became a surprise POWER COUPLE. There's also some yummy plot to keep you reading this story late into the night. ;)

Rectember: BTS RPF works that made me fall in love with a new ship/character

* Think Tidy by nivo (Hobi/Yoongi, 2.1k, Mature) - I have to admit that Sope (Hobi/Yoongi) is one of those ships that I am still dipping my toes in. It's obvious they really care/love each other IRL, so it's fairly easy to understand why they'd be a lovely ship to explore in fic.

In this story, they're newly assigned roommates. Hobi is over the moon at living with someone who enjoys keeping living spaces neat and Yoongi (despite his initial gruff exterior) is a marshmallow of a person. I'd have legit read a 20k fic set in this 'verse.

* sweet hot jackpot (winning the office pool) by (Teen, Seokjin/Jimin,10.1k, Office AU) - New hire!Jimin makes a terrible mistake in eating someone else's food. Now everyone keeps pushing him to fix it.

Do you like zany premises or goofy humor? Then this fic might be for you! I will say that I liked the Office Shenanigans more than the actual romance between Seokjin and Jimin (tho it was lovely!). Still, it made me take a closer look at the oldest hyungs per age group (the hyung and maknae lines) and consider how and why there would be sparkage between them.

BTW, if you do find yourself becoming a Seokjin/Jimin shipper, this author has several fics to scratch that itch. ;)

* Green witch!Namjoon by aptyaki - Canonically, Namjoon (RM) is someone who loves Nature. He has a pet bonsai tree and everything.

This fanart is a gentle spin in that love for flora and fauna by making him a green witch. Not only is the art great (the artist did a really good likeness of RM), but it's also whimsical in the best way possible.

* Hobi/Jungkook fanart by oursummer_ends (Content warning: NSFW fanart that contains nudity (not full frontal, but you can see butt))- Hobi/Jungkook is another one of those ships that I'm slowly checking out. This piece is a rather naughty moment of the two of them in bed. I liked the colors and the intimacy throughout.

* RM/Jungkook Mutual Admiration Society by rinandrix - One of the reasons why I knew I just had to include this rec is that it plays with (again) canonical details. IRL, Jungkook, who had been wooed by several idol agencies, decided to sign with Big Hit (and join BTS) mainly because of RM. In turn, RM was quite starry-eyed about Jungkook because of his talent. They both happen to be sort of muscle bros too.

This fanart highlights the literal mutual admiration in a way that can be considered platonic or romantic or sexual. It's quite neat that way. ;D

Fics under 1K - big list!

I wouldn't remember most fics under 1k if I were asked off the top of my head, and the few I would, I rec'd the other week in the "works I re-read" post. However, this is exactly why I built a fanfic database in the first place. A little fiddling with the SQL to build the right query and some formatting to create a report, and I have a list of all my favorite fics (that were entered in the database so far - I didn't quite get to 1000 total fics before the Yahoo Groups project took over my life last fall, only a handful of smaller fandoms) which are under 1K words. Since that list includes any favorites of the works I wrote, which would violate the self-rec rules, I'll paste the recs here and filter those out.

The one thing that this list doesn't have are the ships, though I'll try to note those if I remember them. (I can run queries and generate reports that limit by ships - or any number of themes, for that matter - that's easy enough, but to include the list of ships in the query results or report would be prohibitively difficult and the results would be terrible to try to wade through, formatting-wise.) So you're getting author - title, with rating and words below that. I'll group fandoms under cuts to make it easier to expand just the ones you know, since this is mainly tiny/rare fandoms. (I'd started with the small ones, adding those to my database, and I hadn't finished the Matrix ones, even, plus I know I'm behind on the FBI ones since that's been an active fandom.)

With short fics it takes more time to describe them than it does to read them, so I'm probably not going to say anything about most of them, and recommend just trying them. I'll try to warn if there's any serious triggers that I remember, but mostly just look at the tags.

One note about ratings: My database includes fics from both Fanfiction.net and AO3, so I adopted a standard MPAA-style rating system, where G to R corresponds to ff.n's K to M, and PG to X (which was shorter to use than NC-17) corresponds to AO3's General Audiences to Explicit, but I may occasionally mark a General as G if it's particularly suitable for children to read. It's a bit of a compromise but so would be any other option. Fics that chose not to use a rating (on AO3 or a blog post) are Unrated.

* Cursed to be a monster!Jungkook by Meowclifer - A fantasy AU in which Jungkook is a prince cursed to become an actually!cuddly monster. The fact that Yeontan (Taehyung's dog) shows up, also hints at some potential Jungkook/Taehyung goodies. :)

* Amazing acrylic paint of King Yoongi by minhmiracleart - A gorgeous painting based on Yoongi's look as the Hoseon era, evil king in the Daechwita mv.

* BTS as geese fanart 1 (Seokjin and Taehyung) and 2 (four of Jungkook's looks by reallynotjin - I love the goofiness in seeing geese versions of Seokjin, Taehyung, and Jungkook. These pieces are sure to make you smile.

* A SOFTE Taehyung/Yoongi moment by dblacat - (Implied nudity because one of the characters is taking a bath, but there's nothing specifically NSFW here) I love the color palette in this piece. Yoongi and Teahyung's overall relaxed and intimate vibe draws you in.

* Fairy!Jin by NevDrawsAyy - It's Jin in his fave pink hoodie smiling at you while sitting on a flower. This is too cute to not share with y'all.

* YoonKook and Vmin hands by neptuneartyk - Although I wouldn't say I'm a hands-type of person, there's something abt Yoongi's hands that makes me swoon. In this instance, the artist has used some of the choreography and/or concert moments to showcase Yoongi/Jungkook. I love the contrast between Yoongi's pale hands and Jungkook's tattooed ones. And then, the second piece has Taehyung's long hands holding onto Jimin's much smaller ones. It's adorable.

* Taehyung x Basquiat by xvii_rx (a.k.a. Roach) - Roach is one of those artists whose pieces ALWAYS makes me stop and really take my time to appreciate everything happening in them. Here we see Roach do a Taehyung portrait inspired by Basquiat. The vibrant colors and overall style are fantastic.

Rectober: Harry Potter F/F Longfic! (Uncommon Kink)

This is a rec for an Explicit fic where the smut does the heavy emotional lifting and is the catalyst for serious character growth. The uncommon kink (at least for my ships) is mutual masturbation. I see this mistagged all the time when people actually mean finger fucking and it makes me sad because I adore mutual masturbation. This fic delivers on that front in spades.

The key themes are sexual discovery and coming out/internalized homophobia.

I know I've already recced this, but there was no way I was going to pass up the opportunity to do it again, LOL. It's an introspective, imo, PWP about a rare-ish kink and how play partners approach it. One thing I liked was that, at no time was Yoongi made to feel lesser than or ashamed for his kink.

Two college bros who have been BFFs for years explore a new kink. This is an incredibly sensual fic as well as super full of emotion.

I will mention that the story begins with an incident of accidental voyeurism. It's dealt with quickly and honestly, tho. One specific thing about this fic that I liked was Jungkook's enthusiasm overriding his surprise at realizing what was happening. Also the choice of plushie that RM was playing with. AHEM.

Anyway, I have to admit that this fic, to me was, sneakily tender. Yes, even with all the naughty play happening in it. ;D

Straightening Up the House by eruthros
The tag "angry vidding" in conjunction with the vidder's summary pretty much says it all: Commemorating more than ten years of queer characters (not) appearing in Marvel films. I love this vid, it's bitter and ambitious and visually engaging, it's set to the perfect music, and... well, it illustrates its point VERY EFFECTIVELY. As a long time queer comics reader it felt a lot like someone had gathered up all my frustrations and set them whimsically to music.

The Untamed / The Fatal Journey

A vid about Nie Huaisang and Nie Mingjue using (mostly) footage from The Untamed's spinoff film The Fatal Journey. (Fair warning: this vid contains massive spoilers for the plot of The Untamed!) There are some genius moments in this vid that will always stick in my head the most - the upshot of Nie Huaisang bowing is one example - but every time I rewatch I spot another great little subtlety I hadn't noticed before.

RPF (or Real Person Vid?): Britney Spears

This vid is 12 years old and I still think about it whenever I think about Britney Spears. It was a little before its time in that regard, I think (though perhaps also reflective of its time in the vidders' notes/comments). It sucks how relevant this vid continues to be more than a decade on, but I think it's an excellent vid that does a great job of making its point about how the American pop music industry chews up and spits out its young stars.

I almost didn't include this vid here because I already have a vid by eruthros on this reclist and besides, what if it wasn't as good as I remembered? But then I rewatched it and great news, it's still fantastic. I hadn't seen a single episode of My Cat From Hell when I first saw this but honestly, you really don't need to have; you just need to have at least some degree of affection for cats. I'm pretty sure that I clutched my chest cartoonishly irl the first time I watched it.

People who know me, know I tend to balk at the suggestion of reading fics longer than 5K. Not because I don’t enjoy longfic, but it’s just such an event for me, and something I don’t have the energy for most days. So, it’s as much a shock to me as anybody, I’m sure, that the thing I’ve reread the most in the last year is an 85K canon divergence AU. This is the OT3 you didn’t know you needed.

They didn't expect to pick up the pieces together, or the work it would take to help Tony fit back in once they got him back.

So when I was choosing fics to rec for this theme, I wasn't paying attention to any overall themes that were occurring. But now that I have compiled the list, I have realised that they all follow the same theme, which is domestic & emotional intimacy. There's also lots of sexual intimacy but the domestic intimacy really stands out.

So if you like Steve/Bucky (because I am still on that train) and love domestic intimacy then boy, do I have a list for you.

The Timeline of Theseus by Applea [The Magnus Archives - Elias & Jon - 80k words, WIP]

Jon travels back in time, and the Eye now has an 8 year old Avatar who doesn't realize that he has powers. Elias doesn't trust him to anyone else's supervision, so he adopts him. I've only been in TMA fandom for a few months but I've reread this like half a dozen times, at least. It's a very fun romp. (Major spoilers for TMA.)

The Moon Laughs by Lady_Origami [The Umbrella Academy - Five & The Hargreeves (but especially Klaus, Ben, and Vanya) - 94k, WIP]

Five is stuck in a timeloop, starting from the day of Reginald's funeral. I always love timeloop stuff, and this one also has delicious, delicious hurt/comfort, which is why I keep coming back.

Connor consults JARVIS, the first "deviant" AI, on how to handle deviants (and recalcitrant humans). Whenever I feel the itch to read Detroit: Become Human fic, I come back to this fic again (and again.)

A Helpful FAQ by Siamesa [A Song of Ice and Fire - Renly Baratheon - 5k, complete]

AU where Renly Baratheon sits on King Stannis' small council and decides to provide some helpful advice to the newest council member. Absolutely hilarious.

Hello, I love vids, so here are ten vids in ten different fandoms that I'm particularly fond of and haven't recced yet. The majority of them are at least a few years old, and most of them also fit the theme of works I've enjoyed many times.

Community: Jeff & the study group (S1-S3): Little Talks
There are so many things I can praise about this vid: the way it shows characterization through relationships so beautifully, the fantastic timing, the fact that we definitely needed a montage of Jeff's meltdowns set to the lines "don't listen to a word I say, the screams all sound the same". But the coloring is what really sets it apart for me. The way it uses black and white and vibrancy to really highlight the point is absolutely gorgeous.

Cracked: After Hours: Company of Fools
I can't resist a vid that feels like a love letter, and I feel like I can feel the love for this silly internet show and the friendship at the core of it pouring out of every second of this vid. It seems like an extremely difficult show to vid, and every beat of this is on point. It's also one of those vids where I feel like it'd be fun even if you hadn't seen the show, just because it's a happy song and an upbeat vid, but if you have, knowing what's going on in some of the chosen moments makes it even better.

Dead Like Me: Mason: There is a Boy Who Never Goes Out
This is the second vid where one of the major draws is the way it illustrates character, and character development in particular, through relationships. I really love how it highlights some of Mason's sweetest moments, and not just with the other main characters. This is one of those vidders where I could link every vid I've ever seen of theirs and probably most of the ones I haven't and you'd get something great, but this one has always stuck with me in particular. Also, the timing is great through the whole thing, but in particular that first twenty seconds or so are just so well-timed and well-done that I want to ask the vidder for their secrets.

Ginger Snaps trilogy: Brigitte & Ginger: In Another Life
Warning for canon-typical violence, blood, death. This is so gloriously done. It weaves the three movies in together so well, and the use of the third one is especially great set against the song choice. I've always loved how the song unfolds, and the vid matches that very particular momentum so well.

Hannibal: Abigail (S1): Blinding
Warning for canon-typical violence, blood, death. Speaking of songs with a very specific and particular momentum and vids that match them beautifully, this is the definitive vid to this song for me. I find both tilting shots and flickering effects can easily become a distraction instead of a benefit, but this vid uses them both perfectly -- the feeling of near-constantly slipping and moving just highlights the nightmarish, off-kilter state of Abigail's story all through the season.

Leverage: Parker: Edge of Glory
First, this is my hands-down favorite Leverage vid of all time. Second, it has one of my two favorite vid summaries of all time. ("Parker x Gravity OTP (but I mean. it's an open relationship.)") It's just a minute and a half of Parker joyously leaping off of things and generally having the time of her life, and it makes me gleeful every time I watch. The timing in this is utterly perfect, and that trailing ending in particular is one of my favorite things.

Sanctuary: Henry Foss: All Star
I am in this fandom 90% for The Five shenanigans. This vid highlights perfectly why Henry is the other 10%. This is another vidder where I could link to pretty much any single vid and you'd have gold, but this one has been a particular favorite for ages.

Sherlock: John (S1): Better Version of Me
I haven't been in Sherlock fandom for a long time, but this vid is a long-time favorite. The use of the road signs and the blinking cursor are just so good, expanding on some visually interesting things from the show itself and making it even better. Pair that with the fantastic choice of song, which works so well both lyrically and with that driving music, and it's absolutely gold.

Sports Night: Sports Analogies
(I've shared the link on this before, but I haven't recced it properly, so I say it counts.) This is the newest thing on this list, from this March, but I've already watched it at least two dozen times, because it is fantastic. There could not be a better choice of song for the show, the clips work perfectly, and every single moment of it is basically perfect. I laugh every single time.

White Collar: Diana: She's a Genius
Sometimes I just need 30 impeccably timed and colored seconds of Diana Berrigan being the biggest badass. Vids of this style were prevalent in the White Collar (and Suits, for that matter) fandom; I've always loved them, and this has always been my #1 favorite of them all.

Raising Hell by bingeling (Ready or Not)
I don't wanna go to Heaven without raisin' hell.

→ Just a fun vid about a woman trying to escape her murderous in-laws. You also don't need to watch the movie first to enjoy.

When You Break by sweetestdrain (Avengers)
Tell me another beautiful lie.

→ This is an amazing vid about the OG Avengers team. If you were like me, and sorely disappointed by Endgame, then this vid will make you feel better. It will also hurt in spots but it reminded me why I love these movies.

Los Ageless by sisabet (Xena)
Burn the Pages of Unwritten Memoirs

→ This is a Xena/Gabrielle vid about all the different alternate lives they had (which were delightfully hilarious at times) and how they're still soulmates in every one. A must-watch if you loved Xena & Gabrielle.

Problem by cherryice (Captain Marvel)
That girl is a problem.

→ I think the editing on this vid is amazing, worth watching even if you haven't seen the movie. The way the scenes are intercut is fantastic.

Sum of Our Parts by aurumcalendula (Bandidas)
We are, we are more than our scars.

→ Bandidas is a movie starring Salma Hayek and Penelope Cruz as two women who become bank robbers to fight injustice! Highly recommend the movie and this vid, which is a lovely overview of the movie and the women's friendship.
