Wednesday Reading Meme & Books 48 - 52 of 2025

I finished five books this week! That's what happens when you spend the days at your mom's and have so much time to read.

What I Just Finished Reading: Since last Wednesday I have read/finished reading: The Ape Who Guards the Balance (An Amelia Peabody Mystery) by Elizabeth Peters, The Prince and the Apocalypse by Kara McDowell, Fugitive Telemetry (The Murderbot Diaries) by Martha Wells, Where Memories Lie (A Duncan Kincaid and Gemma James Mystery) by Deborah Crombie, and All Mortal Flesh (Clare Fergusson/Russ Van Alstyne Mysteries) by Julia Spencer-Fleming.

What I am Currently Reading: I haven’t had time to start another book, but my plan is for it to be the second Lily Adler book.

What I Plan to Read Next: I have the next Amelia Peabody at the library, so probably that one.

Book 48 of 2025: The Ape Who Guards the Balance (An Amelia Peabody Mystery) (Elizabeth Peters)

It was slow-going getting into this book, but once I did I really enjoyed it. spoilers )

I enjoyed this book and have requested the next. I'm giving this book four hearts only because of how difficult it was to get into.

♥♥♥♥

Book 49 of 2025: The Prince and the Apocalypse (Kara McDowell)

This was so good! I can't recall who posted about this book, but thank you! spoilers )

I highly enjoyed this book and have already requested the next from my library. I'm giving this one five hearts.

♥♥♥♥♥

Book 50 of 2025: Fugitive Telemetry (The Murderbot Diaries) (Martha Wells)

I really enjoyed this! Though I'm glad I was warned to read it out of order as it would have been weird to read this one then System Collapse. spoilers )

I enjoyed this book and can't wait for the next one to be released. (I heard there *is* a new one coming out, but I haven't seen a release date for it.) I'm giving this one five hearts. And have the urge to re-read the entire series.

♥♥♥♥♥

Book 51 of 2025: Where Memories Lie (A Duncan Kincaid and Gemma James Mystery) (Deborah Crombie)

I really enjoyed this book! spoilers )

This book was very good and I'm giving it five hearts.

♥♥♥♥♥

Book 52 of 2025: All Mortal Flesh (Clare Fergusson/Russ Van Alstyne Mysteries) (Julia Spencer-Fleming)

This book was so good! spoilers )

I really enjoyed this and look forward to reading the next in the series. I'm giving this one five hearts.

The Day in Spikedluv (Tuesday, July 1)

I was at mom’s by 6:45am so I didn't have much time to get things done before I left. I did manage to fold a load of laundry, hand-wash some dishes, cut up chicken for the dogs’ meals, scoop kitty litter, pack my own lunch, and dropped Grant at the garage. Whew!

My sister called to tell me she got out of work at 2:30pm and could relieve me early, so I was able to get home in time to actually cook supper! I planned to grill something, but it started to pour the moment I got inside the house, so instead I got sauce out of the freezer to defrost and we had spaghetti. I also baked chicken for the dogs, did the usual amount of hand-washing dishes, and did a load in the dishwasher.

I started and finished reading the next Clare Fergusson book and watched the rest of the Hannah Swensen movie.

Temps started out at 72.1(F) and it was only 73 when I got home ~3pm since the storm was moving in, but it had to have broken 80.

Start July as you mean to go on

Technically this was yesterday, but I climbed a hill and had an eagle fly past me. (The hill is the Bodenburg Butte in Palmer, AK.)

Photo from a high vantage point, looking down on farms and fields stretching to blue mountains with their tops covered in clouds. Small figure of an eagle is visible against the clouds.

I realize the eagle is more like a dot, but if you've tried to take a quick photo of a bird, this is without zoom (I was just trying to snap a fast shot without completely losing the experience of having an eagle flying in front of me) so it is actually very close! After it flew past, I turned around and two teenage guys were standing above me, having just descended from the top and watched it too. "Sick," one of them said in obvious delight, and we nodded at each other.

I'm down in Southcentral doing Mom Things. Mom has been moved out of the rental where she was living since last August, and she was supposed to go home via helicopter today, but the weather was a problem. But that's why I reserved two extra days at the Airbnb beforehand, just in case. Tomorrow we try again! She was very respectful of my space today - I think she recognized that I was planning on having the evening to myself tonight and it didn't happen - and I wrote both fanfic and original fiction, and took a long walk to sort some plot things out in my head. Thursday I go home, and perhaps drive the Denali Highway on my way, if the wildfire smoke isn't too bad.

Battleship Exchange 2025: Podfic "Glossary"

(NSFW fics are fully indexed, but SFW is a work in progress)
Hello! Thank you so much for considering podficcing my work!
This is a list of fanfics written by me, matched to the Battleship 2025 tags they contain. It's very long, so you'll probably want to navigate by expanding the list and using CTRL + F.
This list is in good faith and as accurate as I can make it. Everything on my AO3 profiles (Emmalylis and gremdark) is under blanket permission for podfic and other recursive fanworks.
Format is Title (fandom, word count to nearest hundred): tag A, tag B, tag C

In other news...

My computer mouse is acting up (closing windows and minimizing and various things I don't want it to do). The weird thing is, my work mouse is doing the same thing, so I fear it might be my hand. 🤣
There's a Whataburger opening down the street from me. I'll have to see if it lives up to the hype. Do you know what does live up to the hype? Raising Cane's. They have the best chicken I've ever tasted. I've had it a few times now, because each time I think it can't possibly be as good as I remembered. It is.

And this upbeat vid popped up in my YT feed tonight. It's from the Covid days, and I posted it back then too, but it's perfect for these days, too.

We don't know, it's unclear where we'll be this time next year.

It's been a while since I've gotten to do one of these! We'll see if I manage to keep up with all of them, but it looks like fun, so I'm going to try.

And now, I am going to save the creative prompt for tomorrow, because I am very tired and I worked on Sonata for a couple hours already. Creativity coming in the morning after I sleep!

July '25 writing goals

We're halfway through the year! (What?!) June was entirely too busy that it flew by too quickly. Anyway, I'm doing [community profile] sunshine_revival this month, and the first challenge happens to be about setting some goals. So I figure my usual writing goals post will work perfectly for that.

Sunshine-Revival-Carnival-1.png

Last month's post is here

Usually I check in with how successful I was with last month's goals, but I didn't set any in June to give myself a break. And I have to say that break worked perfectly. I wrote a little bit but otherwise rested, so now I'm ready to go again this month.

So let's set some July goals:

And that's that! Hopefully July will be a good writing month for me, unless work gets crazy busy again. We shall see how it goes 🤞

Wishing everyone else success in your own creative endeavors this month too!

Did I need to make potatoes tonight? Not particularly, and it's a little hot to be running the oven. But I got more of my favorite spice mix and yes, I did actually need roasted potatoes, thank you very much.

Trying out the Sunshine Revival

Challenge #1

Journaling Prompt: Light up your journal with activity this month. Talk about your goals for July or for the second half of 2025.

Starting small, for July, I would like to read a book or two, and write more poetry. Also practice ukulele.

And visit like five museums!

For the rest of the year, I want to:
- take more classes (songwriting, banjo, or drawing, ideally)
- learn to cook a new soup (right now I know how to make french onion soup)
- post more fic
- start building more strength physically

I don't have much to say on the journaling front other than Happy Canada Day! to my fellow Canadians. I can't believe its July 1st already.  No goals other than to keep house searching (I'm so tired of house hunting)

Also, thank you to all my dreamwidth friends who have been helping me promote it.  We're currently up to 9 prompts!  But, hopefully we'll get some more.

Sometimes you're puzzling over why the characterization doesn't seem right, and then you realize that it's because you wrote someone having wayyyy more maturity and self-awareness than they should. Hoo boy.

Well, at least now I know how to fix this thing. :V

Speaking of writing, signups for [community profile] iddyiddybangbang will be opening on July 10! This is a panfandom fest where the goal is to write a fic of at least 5k featuring whatever fulfills your desires/tickles your fancy/brings you joy. You can sign up with a WIP, too, rather than starting something totally new.

I've participated in it a few times before and always found it good fun. The July signup + September deadline + minimum wordcount has done wonders for getting me to tackle ideas longer than my usual and finish things that have languished in my WIP folder for years.
