Invictus Kenshin/Kaoru, background Sano/Megumi Summary: In the eleventh year of the Meiji, 1878, Japan still practices chattel slavery. The Tokugawa shogunate still reigns from Edo castle, backed by the infamous Kanryu family and their merchant empire. And Kaoru Kamiya finds an abandoned slave hiding under the docks as she's walking home... https://archiveofourown.org/works/652009
Both of these fics are long, meaty AUs that skillfully integrate canon events into the AU setting, with a great slow-burn romance and also great plot beyond the romance. Unfortunately, the sequel to Invictus seems to be an eternal WIP (last updated 2015), but I enjoyed Invictus very much on its own.
