He wasn’t sure what he was expecting from the boy, perhaps for him to be fearful, or even angry, at being uprooted from whatever his life had been before. But he certainly wasn’t expecting Eric to shrug his shoulders, and for his mouth to pull up into a smile.
“I’m not,” Eric said. “It’s the best thing that ever happened to me.”

Tsume dreams of a grin so earnest it splits that person’s face in two. He should dismiss it; he’s been burned before, by people with smiles that look true but whose interests are wholly their own. He’s better by himself and he knows it. He’s always known it—in his dreams, he knows it too.
But this warm presence keeps recurring in his dreams, closer and softer and warmer each time, until he wakes up certain that he knew this person as well as two people could know one another.
