Community Recs Post!

Every Thursday, we have a community post, just like this one, where you can drop a rec or five in the comments.

This works great if you only have one rec and don't want to make a whole post for it, or if you don't have a DW account, or if you're shy. ;)

(But don't forget: you can deffo make posts of your own seven days a week. ;D!)

So what cool fanarts/other kinds of fanwork/fancrafts/fics/fanvids/podfics have we discovered this week? Drop it in the comments below. Anon comment is enabled.

BTW, AI fanworks are not eligible for reccing at recthething. If you aware that a fanwork is AI-generated, please do not rec it here

Assorted Tumblr art recs from me today:

Babylon 5
- Londo Mollari (gorgeous)

MDZS/The Untamed
- National Geographic Magazine - Hauntingly Beautiful Remains of Yiling Laozu (Utterly gorgeous fanart for The Shade Of Old Trees by Kryal which I recced a few weeks ago)
- Lessons in night hunt - The mentor sits aside and watches with curiosity how the fruits of his labour unfold (love the look on WWX's face as the juniors work their way through figuring things out)
- Everyone had their own path to take (gorgeous WWX-centric comic)

Scooby Doo
- Who had late Victorian Scooby Doo on their 2024 bingo card? Hmm? (delightful re-imagining of the Scooby gang)

Scooby Doo/Sherlock Holmes crossover
- Mystery Inc. meet Holmes and Watson! (more of the Victorian Scooby gang, this time meeting Holmes and Watson!)

Sherlock Holmes- ACD
- Holmes and Watson dancing (very sweet)

Star Trek:TOS
- i havent seen wrath of khan (hilarious comic)

Supernatural
- “Saving People, Hunting things” My tribute to Supernatural Season 1. I can’t believe the show will be celebrating its 20th anniversary next year. (amazing art)

The X-Files
- Mulder and Scully "x files studies but this time I tired to achieve that VHS feeling. I very vaguely remember watching some episodes as a kid, and I think this is as close as I’ve ever got to recreating that memory of a small, grainy tv in a dark room" (gorgeously done)

Love the X-Files art pieces! Also had to do a double-take at the realization that SPN is almost 20 years old at this point...

Journey 1986 by [archiveofourown.org profile] Scrivener_Pogona
MirSan and InuKag, 36898 words and counting, Rated E (definitely NSFW - contains explicit sexual content, drug use, depictions of racism, and more)
I don't even know where to start with this one. It's an ambitious AU, re-imagining characters from feudal era Japan in late 1980s San Diego. Instead of his canon background as a monk, in this story Miroku is a heavy metal (literal) warlock, getting into trouble at school and elsewhere... and dealing with the supernatural on the side. The story is just getting started, so we've only really just met the other canon characters, but I've really enjoyed how this author has translated them into this new setting. One thing I've found refreshing about this story is its specificity. It very much takes place in a specific time and place. The characters have retained their Japanese heritage and their connections with Japan and its culture and history, and that is reflected in their interactions with each other and with the other people around them. And the metal and 80s references are a delight.

I don't like to be the person who starts a rec with "I don't usually like [x], but..." so I'm putting this at the end, but: I don't generally enjoy modern/mundane AU stories for this fandom because they often read as unmoored from both canon and reality in a way that doesn't appeal to me. This story doesn't suffer from that at all.

Did I mention it's full of heavy metal references and includes a mix tape track at the end of each chapter?

One quick Leverage rec:

You and I Aren't Most People by Mockingbird (DarkTidings) (1837 words)
A nice little fic exploring the relationships between Eliot, Parker, and Hardison (particularly as how it relates to the asexuality spectrum) via a conversation between Eliot and Parker. It's not even my preferred take but it's done very well so I enjoyed it quite a lot!
