* Valara (Rated E, Taehyung/Yoongi, 12.5k) Space AU + Domestic Bliss - It's Taehyung and Yoongi's ten-year anniversary and they're finally planetside shopping for presents.

This is both a simple fic abt married ppl who are still totally in lurve with each other AND a fascinating Space AU with superb worldbuilding. The overall mood was cozy (with some naughty moments here and there, heheh) and loving. A treat.


* Naked Juice by danytrashcatt (Rated Teen, Taehyung/Yoongi, other background ships, 8.1k) College AU - Nearly every weekday morning, Taehyung moseys over to a smoothie bar just so he can throw the cheesiest pick-up lines at a certain guy.

Things are going well until the first day of Life Drawing 101 class when said guy is the class' nude model…

Humor is one of those things that's extremely subjective: what one person finds hilarious, another one will consider it embarrassing. So, in a way, I can understand why the premise might turn some ppl away from reading this fic and, hey, you know yourself.

OTOH, I did think this story was LOLarious in a way that managed to sidestep secondhand embarrassment in a rather brilliant way. As in: I was LMAO v. late into the night. I also love the author's style and the characterizations throughout.

Great fic with great worldbuilding and the gift of a good AU: it makes you look at the world and the characters totally differently.

The premise with which this fic starts and on which it builds - that Elven weddings bands are golden and that Elvish marriages per Laws and Customs are bonds of the soul and mind as much as (if not more so than) of the body, coupled with this pairing makes this a very interesting exploration of what it would mean for Celebrimbor to be bonded to a version of Sauron that has not gone through any kind of reflection on his actions and their consequences. Chilling and marvellous because of that.

"But Potter, really?" said Severus.

"He and Black cooked up a jinx that gives you a boil every time you say a slur to a Muggleborn," said Lily. "It was either invite them to Alice's war club or bake them cookies, and I know where my skills lie."

Severus sniffed. "Don't come crying to me if he tugs your pigtails."

"Come crying to me if he pulls yours, and I'll deck him," said Lily.

(Slight AU in which Severus apologizes, tries harder, and stays friends with Lily)

Bookmarker's Notes:

People that know me (or talk to me about Harry Potter for longer than five minutes) is that I have huge issues with the way the relationship between Severus and Lily is handled in canon and with the consequences this has for both their wider character arcs.

In short, this story takes my problems and tosses them out the window by giving all three of the adult characters involved the ability to communicate and to handle their emotions maturely and well. The scene between Severus and James and the fact that it is him as opposed to Hagrid that gets Harry on the night of his parents' death have to be among my favourite changes to canon. As an additional plus, the writing is really vivid and accessible at the same time. Overall, the fic has a really good chance of simply replacing canon in my head as time goes on.

You know the pairings with you are okay with but not wild about in canon? You loved what canon does with them but you think that's enough, and you don't need more? And then a fic just happens and slams your interest in the pairing wide open?

Yes, that sort of fic is what "you wait and you wonder who'll take on your odds" was for me and Benny/Beth. I enjoyed that canon did not end with them in a committed relationship, but I love the paths and the exploration this fic takes and undertakes to make these characters fall in love convincingly and lastingly. The tight POV ensures that we as readers slowly get to explore these characters and their relationships to themselves and others, including their own bodies and their sense of self (which was one of my favourite aspects of the narrative to tell the truth).

Thankfully, this tight focus still manages to convincingly keep an eye on all the other characters that make up Beth's and Benny's chess world and continues their arcs from the show as well as it does those of the main characters.

Most of the fics about trans characters in the HP verse I am currently reading are quite good at broadening the Wizarding World beyond the rather narrow confines canon gives us and the author can apparently imagine. But there was something especially interesting about this fic: it takes a character and a world (Draco Malfoy and pureblood culture) and presents them not as fundamentally and irredeemably bigoted on all fronts but as willing to listen to Draco on his desires at least, and it shows the trio as coming to do the same as time goes on. It is on the basis of this trust that Harry comes to love Draco and while the fic has a great ending I wish there were more of it. But what there is is definitely worth the read.

And if she's going to succeed, she'll have to learn to trust rookie pathfinder Sara Ryder with her darkest secrets.
This was a really great slow-burn Vetra romance, more drawn-out than the game has it done, with so much lovely nuance on Vetra and her personality and backstory that we'll alas probably never get.

- A Sensitive Spirit (Just Waiting to Shine) by Stratisphyre (T, Jaal/f!Ryder, 11.8k)
The first time Jaal sees Sara Ryder, she’s standing to the left of Sloane Kelly’s throne on Kadara, a M8 tucked into the cradle of her arms—finger close to, but not on, the trigger—and the Pathfinder is doing his utmost to ignore her completely.
I'm not super big on the canon version of the Jaal romance because it tends a bit too fluffy for me, so this was perfect: more pining, more angst, and this author's take on Jaal's internal narration is superb. Canon divergence with Pathfinder Alec Ryder, comatose Scott, and exile Sara. Such a delight!!
