The Old Guard Reverse Bang 2022 RECS

Some more recs from where I am slowly making my way through all the wonderful stories. Please note: I won't be reading or reccing every story due to personal taste! Also, I tend not to rec WIPS no matter how beautifully written to this point. ALL the stories are worth checking out for the gorgeous artwork, regardless!

Title: The Road to Malta by xJane, Art by Hoax
Summary: They are enemies at the gates of al-Quds. But it's a long road to Malta...
Rec: This is their journey from al-Quds (Jerusalem) to Malta, learning about each other along the way. Learning to communicate, workign through misunderstandings, and slowly moving from enemies to travel companions to friends and finally to lovers. Well written and contains some beautiful pieces of art by Hoax.

Title: Did you walk on water just to save me? by BeesKnees, Art by Nele
Summary: Quynh is lost but not for long. Andromache, Yusuf, and Nicolo save her this time.
Rec: This is a canon divergence story where they discover where Quynh was dropped into the ocean and, within weeks of her being tossed overboard, she is rescued. The intensity of the search and how it affects each of them is beautifully written. I loved how Quynh is the one who reminds them of the beauty in the world, making them all take a long break to enjoy life. I like how Andy is the one who reaches Booker, stopping him from returning to his family with her words but all of them watching over Booker's family until the end.

Title: And the Waves Will Never Weep by Bodgei, Art by ZairaA
Summary: Joe thought he had lost his soulmate. Will a search for a myth show him love he could never imagine?
Rec: I adore stories about mythological beings, especially mer-people. Loved the mythology, with Joe's tears bringing his true soulmate swimming from the deep, and all the action after Nicky (the merman) is captured. Lots of angst but with a happy ending.

Title: Blessed be the Day by linx91, nolimepercipere, Art by Zambetta
Summary: "Do you ever wonder what it would have been like to meet when we were that age?"
Nicolò shakes his head at him fondly and follows suit. "At that age, I was already in the monastery. It would have been impossible for us to meet like that."
"Don't ruin my fantasy with your common sense!"
"Do tell me, then, love. How would we have met?"
Rec: Joe and Nicky are in Florence around 1470. The story follows them meeting back up after spending a short time apart. I love all the descriptions of the city and its people, and of the workshop where Yusuf talks of an apprentice, Leonardo, with extraordinary talent. I love all the sweet moments between them but also when they go to the aid of a young man being attacked.

This works great if you only have one rec and don't want to make a whole post for it, or if you don't have a DW account, or if you're shy. ;)

(But don't forget: you can deffo make posts of your own seven days a week. ;D!)

I've read about half the stories so far, and these are the ones that have resonated with me.

All the stories (and the gorgeous art) can be found at: The Old Guard Reverse Bang 2022

Title: Through the Ages Series by lilolilyrae, Art by Nele
Summary: Quynh is taken away in the iron coffin, but her immortal companions are still trying to get to her in time. A rescue is a team effort.
Rec: Andy/Quynh, Joe & Nicky - Canon divergence AU where the boys arrive in time to stop the ship (by sinking it) from carrying Quynh away and all three work to free Quynh from the iron maiden. Tense and action filled. I could feel all of Andy's distress.

Title: Autumn 1994 by Ignisentis, Art by Psyclo
Summary: When an innocent bystander saves Joe's life at the cost of his own, both Joe and Nicky have to deal with the aftermath, physically and psychologically. But life is never as simple as it seems, and it turns out the bystander isn't so innocent after all.
Rec: Joe/Nicky - The gorgeous artwork by is a comic and the author has fleshed it out with a wonderful story, bringing it all together beautifully.

Title: Spice Trails by quincette, Art by Aivelin
Summary: Nicky is on a quest to fool the oldest tongue in the world. Joe is all to happy to assist.
Rec: The story is the journey from where they were 'vacationing' to that meeting in Marrakesh with Booker and Andy... and how Nicky had hoped to fool Andy along the way as he picks up the ingredients to make baklava.

Title: Brethren Shield In Danger's Hour by addyke, Art by Giò
Summary: April 1912: Joe and Nicky are living in Manhattan, and waiting for Booker to join them in New York after eighteen months apart. Booker is traveling across the Atlantic on the maiden voyage of the SS Titanic. Then the unimaginable happens to Booker's ship, and Joe and Nicky despair that they may have lost him forever.
Rec: Anything to do with the Titanic is always harrowing, but in this story there is also the fear from Booker, Joe, and Nicky of Booker being lost at sea, just like Quynh.

Title: With You Always by totalnerdatheart, Art by krimsnkrams
Summary: Joe meets Nicky on the football field in the fall. Yusuf meets Nicolo on the battlefield. Two tales of love.
Rec: It was interesting reading these two stories interwoven, depicting a magical AU and a modern AU, and although the end reveal came as no great surprise, it was so sweet and enjoyable.

  1. [Vid] Rebels Rising by condnsdmlk. A reminder that it's Star Wars and that the Rebellion lives. A great ride.

  2. Hercule Polycule by Kerguelen. So fun to watch! The song alone would make you laugh but the perfect choices throughout to set up Poirot, Hastings and Japp in this jaunty little vid is a delight to canon fan and non-fan alike.

  3. Murderbot's Law by pendrecarc. Captures Murderbot's voice very well and is a nice mini-adventure.

  4. [FANVID] So Emotional by Emcee1138. "A tribute to Spock and all of the people who love him." Spock across the different series. That shrug at 8 seconds in -- HA!

  5. Explosions by PoliticalPadmé (magnetgirl). An excellent look at the connections and conflicts across the Star Wars generations with some striking transitions and matched shots across films.

A few recs in various fandoms from [community profile] raremaleslashex, based on my first quick perusal of the offerings!

Six Feet Deep (Gattaca, Vincent/Eugene, 1400 wds)
In which Jerome Eugene Morrow has a swimming pool in his basement.

Sweet, painful, sharply characterized, and really feels like them. (Warning for canon-typical suicidal ideation.)

There were TWO Ben/Shaw werewolf fics for Ben January, as there should be, so I'm reccing them together, as they're both really good with good character voices and a perfect fit with their respective parts of canon:

the moon that breaks the night (1600 wds)
Missing scene (with werewolves) for Death and Hard Cider with sweet h/c and established relationship.

A Promise to the Moon (1000 wds)
Missing scene for The Shirt on His Back with strong action scenes and get-together.

And a real standout for me in a fandom I don't normally read:

(Another) Resolution (Magnum P.I. (1980), Magnum/Higgins, 3100 wds)
After an injury, Magnum returns to Robin's Nest with Lily. Higgins has a plan for what Magnum should do next.

This fic absolutely nails the character voices and the general feel and style of canon, including its deadpan humor and Magnum's general tendency to talk around emotional subjects. It also has a very canon-appropriate get-together, an explanation for Robin Masters that makes an impressive amount of sense, and even a sympathetic Agatha cameo. I really liked it.

sholio: Halloween candles (Halloween-candles)
[personal profile] sholio
I haven't read widely in the Summer of Horror collection yet, but here are some things I've enjoyed so far!

Nor Any Drop (Biggles books (WE Johns), gen, 12K)
Blowing up the reservoir has more consequences than Biggles expected. AU of Biggles Flies East.

This is possibly one of the tensest fanfic reading experiences I have EVER had, due in part to having absolutely no idea who (if anyone) was going to survive and how (if so) they possibly could survive. The horror element is absolutely horrific but in a low-key way that's more psychologically horrifying than splattery/gory. If you don't know the canon, I think you could probably read this as original fiction and pretend they're OC WWI spies on opposite sides. If this was an original horror story, it would be a very good one IMHO.

On and On and On (Archie comics, gen, 1400 wds)
It's another sunny day in Riverdale, and Archie is heading into the woods with his friends. Surely the witch he's heard so much about doesn't really live there too...

This one has a really excellent, chilling twist that works wonderfully with the canon and I absolutely did not see coming.

Sokovia, still (Falcon & the Winter Soldier, gen, 1200 wds)
Although it had fallen, Sokovia refused to go quietly.

I think it's the matter-of-factness that makes this one so chilling: yes, Sokovia is full of ghosts; no, there's nothing to be done about it, any more than the tragedy that created them can be fixed. You just have to deal with it and move on. I love the sense of ... I don't even really know what to call it, jaded despair that permeates this story.

The Three-Eyed Shadow (Yu Yu Hakusho, Hiei & Yukina gen, 2800 wds)
Yukina is kidnapped in Makai before she manages to reach the human world. Things go... a little differently.

A little detour into one of my very old fandoms! Yukina's story is tragic enough in canon (she's an ice maiden whose tears are jewels, who is kidnapped and tortured to make her cry to cause her captors to become rich; all of that is actual canon) and this is a turn-left-at-canon AU take on that. The descriptions of her situation are very vivid and chilling, and this variation on her rescue takes things in a very different direction than canon.

And I was completely thrilled with my gifts! Both are for the Biggles book series.

Red as Blood (Biggles books, Biggles/von Stalhein, 3000 wds)
A deliciously dark, atmospheric and vivid Beauty and the Beast tale with really nice character/relationship arcs and a powerful ending.

Still and White (Biggles/von Stalhein, 4200 wds)
Snowbound in a castle with a ghost! Eerie, haunting (literally and figuratively) and sometimes charmingly funny, with a wonderful and chilling coda.
