I haven't requested A/B/O, but you're OK to mix that in with whatever other scenario as long as Elliot's an alpha, Liv's an omega, and Kathy's a beta. (It's pretty obvious that Instinct imprinted on me, lol, isn't it?)
I also didn't request Sharing a Bed but I'm always good with that trope being thrown into any fic.
Below are further thoughts, under various headings.
( Some thoughts )
And now for the requested tropes, many of which can be combined:

Actors who Sing: Christian Kane (Leverage)
Jul. 1st, 2025 12:57 am![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
First is my favorite of his songs, "Thinking of You." And I tossed in the Leverage fanvid to "House Rules" too, just in case there's someone who hasn't seen it. It was a bit famous because Christian himself tweeted about it when it came out (which was 15 years ago btw). And if you want to see the others in the series, just search the tag: music: actors who sing

Medium: Fic

Rating: Teen

Summary: A typical raid for Captain Bonnet and his new first mate.
Excerpt:
“I’m getting the hang of this, if I do say so myself,” says Stede, cheerily.
“And you do.”
“What’s that, Izzy?’
“Say so yourself.” The man looks entirely unimpressed, but it does take a lot to impress Izzy. Stede has accepted it by this point, and knows not to take it personally. Knows, too, that if Izzy actually wasn’t at least a little happy with him, he could leave the ship just about anywhere and find another pirate crew to join. And yet, port after port, he doesn’t.
And all Stede had ever wanted was for people to stay.
This is everything I love about the idea of Stede and Izzy together on the Revenge, with Stede captaining and Izzy serving as his first mate. The way they rile each other up is perfect, tempered to just the right heat by a better understanding of each other. Izzy's ways of trying to serve Stede while keeping his ego in check are moving, and so is Stede's growing sense of what he's doing and what it means.
The story's funny, with a comedic moment early on that made me laugh out loud, and the sexual chemistry between Stede and Izzy absolutely crackles. This one really made my day.

There also seemed to be a lack of research. The main character is from Estonia because Patti saw a documentary about Estonia that she was really taken with. But maybe that's all there is to be researched in a short vignette? No, though. The whole book came off more like an exercise than anything else.
In fandom world, tumblr is great as usual, but I'm not sure how to connect my fandom persona to tumblr, as I have irl people on there. But at the same time, I have fandom people that I've followed for years on tumblr, whom are my mutuals that I occasionally interact with.
I am slowlyyyyy making my way through Reliance by roseveare on AO3 and it is such a beautiful work. I can't remember the last time I read such a strong internal voice for a character.
I think I'm going through it so slowly because I'm savoring it, perhaps.
I'm thinking about taking banjo lessons.

OC Monday: 6/30/25
Jun. 30th, 2025 06:43 pm![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
What is OC Monday?
A trend started by penbrydd on Pillowfort, it's an excuse to talk about your original characters, or to invite your followers to ask about them every Monday!
Buckle up, fellas, we're talking about OC TRAUMA this Monday!! 😅 (I'll make sure to omit the gory details and keep it brief!!)
To start with a prompt from this week's post: Does your OC have any piercings?
One thing that's a constant in all of my OC designs is that they all have piercings to some degree, with the most basic being one or two lobe piercings on each ear! To list some specifics:
Fafnir has two lobe piercings on each ear, as well as a septum ring piercing! (It has a small pearl in it in remembrance of his mother!)
Theo not only has two lobe piercings in each ear, but a bar piercing through the top of his left ear, and a set of snake bite piercings!! He also wants a septum, and ends up getting that later down the line after graduating college and marrying his husband.
Rem has two lobe piercings on each ear, but only wears one set on his left ear to match his boyfriend.
Vha (surprisingly) just has snake bites. xD (We need to get you a few more piercings, son...)
And now to catch up on last week's prompt: Has your OC ever witnessed something that fundamentally changed them?
Won't get too much into it since it would veer too much into Big Sads territory, but Rem unfortunately got to witness his family's deaths when he was 8yo and it DRASTICALLY changed how he approached people going forward, even more so considering that he was made to feel like the "black sheep" while already dealing with survivor's guilt. As he gets older, he gets into therapy and is able to overcome the trauma of that night, just was a JOURNEY to get there. xD
Siza'li and Vha also qualify for the "Witnessed My Family Die and All I Got Was This Stupid Survivor's Guilt" trope. xD Both used to be very grumpy and closed off, but are doing much better!! (Siza'li is still kinda closed off, though. He takes MUCH longer to make progress in that regard. xD)
My OC Sil'verah witnessed his mother performing a very dark summoning ritual when he was 10yo, and for a while he was secretly terrified of any black magic or void entities. As an adult not so much, but as a child he was having nightmares almost every night.
Fafnir also technically qualifies for this since he lost so much of his family to disease and war, and it lead to him becoming self-sacrificial and closed off for a while.

Pride collections either sucking or not happening this year is being very inconvenient for me. Ditto art pop ups and markets either not being around or turning out to be furry event that the venue mis-advertised. (the more I think about it, the more that one event just makes me feel fucking depressed)
I was even at the mall yesterday for various reasons and the only place with rainbowy and/or pride stuff was the PopMart store and no, I am not going down that path.
Ten Arguments for Deleting Your Social Media Accounts Right Now
Jun. 30th, 2025 06:27 pm![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
Review
I briefly mentioned this in my 2024 reading roundup; I really liked it! The narrator for the audiobook also did a fantastic job-- I'm not sure how much of a difference that made, but I can at least imagine reading the book in written form and liking it less than the audiobook version, since I think the narrator really sells some of the turns of phrase. In any case, this was a pleasant listening experience for me, someone that's already a full on social media hater and has an axe to grind about it.
( cut for length )
The Arguments
Before getting into the arguments, I want to share the author's note from the introduction, dated March 2018:
( cut for length )
You are losing your free will.
Basically, social media is (1) designed to manipulate you and (2) addictive. You spend increasing amount of time glued to your screen, actively consuming material meant to direct your behavior (usually into buying things) and/or giving your information to the platform to help them present the material that will direct your behavior. Weird and bad.
( cut for length )
Quitting social media is the most finely targeted way to resist the insanity of our times.
( cut for length )
Social media is making you into an asshole.
( cut for length )
Social media is undermining truth.
( cut for length )
Social media is making what you say meaningless.
( cut for length )
Social media is destroying your capacity for empathy.
( cut for length )
Social media is making you unhappy.
( cut for length )
Social media doesn't want you to have economic dignity.
( cut for length )
Social media is making politics impossible.
( cut for length )
Social media hates your soul.
( cut for length )
Final Thoughts
( cut for length and tbh I think I repeat myself a fair amount )
*finally finishes this post several months after starting it*

The Works of P. Djèlí Clark
Salon I/J Friday, July 18, 2025, 1:00 PM EDT
Our Guest of Honor P. Djèlí Clark rounded out his first decade as a published author with a Nebula and a Locus for his fantasy police procedural novel, The Master of Djinn, and both those awards plus a British Fantasy Award for his monster-hunting novella Ring Shout. His short story "How to Raise a Kraken in Your Bathtub" is short-listed for the Hugo this year. As a History professor at University of Connecticut, he investigates the pathways leading from West African storyteller/poets (griots, a.k.a. djèlí) to the American abolitionist movement. Help us celebrate the works of our honored guest!
The Purposes of Memorable Insults in Sci-Fi and Fantasy
Salon I/J Friday, July 18, 2025, 5:00 PM EDT
Some of the most quotable lines in science fiction and fantasy are zingers. Wit can do a lot to build a character, a world, and a universe, and has the ability to either support or undermine reader expectations. This panel aims to explore and elaborate on the use of wit—and especially takedowns—in literature, exposing how a verbal jab can serve as more than just a punchline.
Moving from Traditional Publishing to Self-Publishing
Salon G/H Friday, July 18, 2025, 7:00 PM EDT
It's becoming increasingly common to hear of authors whose self-published work was so successful that they were picked up by a traditional publisher. But what of the authors who have gone the other way, by turning their backs on traditional publishing and going into self-publishing? Panelists will survey the varying reasons for making this transition, how authors have navigated it, and what this might say about the state of publishing overall.

Meet the Pros(e) party
Salon F Friday, July 18, 2025, 10:15 PM EDT
Program participants are assigned to tables with a roughly equal number of conferencegoers and other participants, and then table placements are scrambled at regular intervals so that everyone gets to meet a new set of people in a small-group setting. Think of it as a low-key sort of speed dating where you need never be the sole focus of anyone's attention, and the goal is just to get to know some cool Readerconnish people. Please note that this event will include a bar and is mask-optional, unlike most other programming.
The Works of Cecilia Tan [I'm moderating this one]
Salon I/J Saturday, July 19, 2025, 12:00 PM EDT
Our Guest of Honor, Cecilia Tan, has a publication history that spans Asimov's, Absolute Magnitude, Ms. Magazine, Penthouse, and Best American Erotica, among others. Writer and editor of science fiction and fantasy, especially as they intersect with erotica and romance, she is also the founder of Circlet Press, an independent publisher that specializes in speculative erotica. Her own writing earned a Lifetime Achievement for Erotica in 2014 from Romantic Times magazine. She also contributes to America's other pastime, baseball, in her role as Publications Director for the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR). Come hear our panel discuss Cecilia's many talents and accomplishments.
Un-Kafkaesque Bureaucracies
Salon I/J Saturday, July 19, 2025, 7:00 PM EDT
In fiction, bureaucracies are generally depicted as evil in its most banal form, yet many of the actual bureaucracies that shape our lives exist to protect us from corporate greed. How can—and should—we tell other stories about bureaucrats and bureaucracies, particularly as the U.S. stands on the precipice of disastrous deregulation? And might fantasies of bureaucracy (such Addison's The Goblin Emperor and Goddard's The Hands of the Emperor) be the next cozy subgenre?
The Endless Appetite for Fanfiction
Create / Collaborate Saturday, July 19, 2025, 8:00 PM EDT
In an article of the same name (https://www.fansplaining.com/articles/endless-appetite-fanfiction), Elizabeth Minkel discussed how "2024 was the year [fanfic] truly broke containment—everyone seemed to want a piece of the fanfiction pie, leaving fic authors themselves besieged on all sides." Attempts to steal and monetize fanfic proliferated, as did reviews treating living authors as distant and unreachable. What do these trends say about larger changes in attitudes toward stories and creators? How can fans of all kinds nurture supportive connections to authors?
