Halo Effect by Alex51324 is a massive, massive (526,782 words in two novels) "Downton Abbey" AU with lots of neepery about WWI. Focuses on a gay character, Thomas Barrow, and what would happen if his plotline worked out better for him.

I have seen about 1/3 of one episode of the show, so this is one you can read with no knowledge of the show (it might even be better that way, since the main character is an antagonist in canon).

WOWZA at both the word count and the author (I know of them from my due South days. So, like, from a while back.)

I have to find a Downton summary, because a couple of plotlines from what I assume are canon just got dropped. I think I was supposed to know how those came out.

Definitely also seconding (thirding? forthing?) this rec, it's an amazing fic. I may have been known to rec this to non-fanish fans to explain to them why I love fanfic
