[personal profile] glitteryv posting in [community profile] recthething
Every Thursday, we have a community post, just like this one, where you can drop a rec or two in the comments. This works great if you only have one rec and don't want to make a whole post for it, or if you don't have a DW account to make posts of your own, or if you're shy. ;)

(But don't forget, you're free to make posts seven days a week! :D)

So what cool fic/vid/art have we discovered this week? Drop it in the comments below. Anon comment is enabled.

The Bear and The Blackbird by UniversalSatan
Word Count: 28123 words
Fandom: Star Trek: TOS
Rating: T
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Kirk/Spock/McCoy, McCoy/Spock, Minor Chapel/Uhura
Summary: Jim, a chivalrous knight born-farmboy, embarks on a valiant quest to return home and protect his village from a dragon threat. On his journey, he is accompanied by his friend Spock—a bard sprite—and the friendly stranger Bones—a holy saint—who only seek to ensure Jim's protection.
When Jim is kidnapped in the night as neither sprite or saint are looking, Spock and Leonard must put aside their differences in the unforseen quest to find their friend
Reccer's Note: Did you ever wonder what would happen if you took the TOS characters and plopped them down in the middle of a classic fairy tale? The author does a nice job of it here, Jim is a classic knight going on a valiant quest with his supernatural companions. McCoy is a spectral saint in this piece, and I think this might the first time I've ever read a story where a dead saint goes on an adventure to help those who pray to him. The majority of the fic is focused on the Spock/McCoy relationship, as they have to work together to save Jim, but the story is peppered with cameo appearances from other members of the bridge crew, and whenever they showed up it would make me smile. Also, because this is a big bang fic there is a couple of pieces of lovely artwork with it, but if you get the chance click through to the artist's page where they have a larger portrait of the characters.

Born of Mortal Flesh by anactoria
Word Count: 27745 words
Fandom: Supernatural

Relationships: Dean/Benny
Summary: Canon-divergent AU, (very) loosely inspired by the Ballad of Tam Lin. While on a hunt with John, Dean discovers a mysterious mirror in a witch's attic, and finds himself transported to the world of Faerie. On the other side, he meets somebody who's been stuck there much longer than him. Somebody who makes him reconsider everything he's been taught about trusting monsters, and a few things about himself that he’s been denying. But Benny's a favourite pet of the King of Fairyland, and their budding relationship seems doomed. Years later, Dean finds himself back among the fae—and a second chance to save Benny may just be a chance to save the world.
Reccer's Note: A pre-canon Dean gets pulled into the magical land of the fae, but the fairies in this stories are not nice, and he his protected by Benny. Essentially it ponders what if Dean and Benny met under different circumstances. This is such a nice mix of SPN and a fairy tale, and it seems plausible, considering other worlds, the fae, and portals all exist in canon.

Not a new discovery, but I re-read Lilac City by nwhepcat, an all-time favorite sequel series to Buffy: the Vampire Slayer that is so much better than the actual show. Her post-series versions of Xander are, in my opinion, far superior to the character we saw on screen, and he's the point of view character here. A recovering alcoholic, he's fled to Spokane after painfully splitting from the Scooby Gang, and manages a grocery store on the night shift. Until Things begin to happen, and he has to remember his vampire-killing skills, and other things that make life worth living rather than just existing within. It was just as good as the previous few times I've read it. Highly recommended. Content warnings for alcoholism and sad deaths-by-vampire, but there's also Found Family and reconnection with both people and skills, and guitars.

.The Middleground by I Am Lu
Cilan/Iris, T, 135k+ words; There’s an old adage that history, if forgotten, will repeat itself. Iris is 17 years old when Unova breaks into an ideological civil war. With only a letter from her late mentor to guide her, she sets off with a group of other trainers displaced by the war, including her friend Cilan, to restore peace to their divided nation.

A very interesting AU with really cool worldbuilding and so many good relationships between the main group. <3

some more MDZS/Untamed recs:

Wayfinding by bumblebeesknees (14k)
Summary: It hasn’t even been a full day since he's been back in Lan Zhan’s company and already Wei Wuxian knows he’s been wrong. Turns out it really is quite easy to pretend he’s content with what he has when what he doesn’t isn’t right in front of him, as steady and wonderful and unattainable as ever. (probably the sweetest post-canon get together for WWX and LWJ that I've read)

as i stumble homewards by the_pretzel (27.5k)
Summary: Six years after the siege at the Burial Mounds, the Jiang Sect looks to Yiling once more as rumors of a young demonic cultivator and the restless spirit which trails behind him reach their ears. Luckily for the two in question, Hanguang-jun has heard the same rumors, and comes trailing behind. A-Yuan, in the meanwhile, is not pleased at having his life disrupted, especially by a man who has mysterious intentions towards his Xian-gege (really interesting AU where A-Yuan was raised by WWX's ghost)

Resonant Bonds by nirejseki (4k)
Summary Snippet: Wei Wuxian had been obsessed with the idea of a resonant bond ever since he first learned about it... A bond that would mean he need never fear abandonment, to never need to worry about someone going out only for a little and then never coming back. It would be amazing, he thought - right up until he punched Jin Zixuan in the face for insulting his shijie and something just –Clicked. (A really interesting WWX and JZN accidentally bonding AU fic)

There's a Baby Loose in the Burial Mounds! by ScarlettStorm (3k)
Summary snippet: People think Wei Wuxian somehow cleansed the resentment of the Burial Mounds for the Wen survivors, but actually, the ghosts did it as babyproofing. (utterly delightful outsider POV here where the ghosts of the burial mounds are a little more aware than we were led to believe)

I have never seen any Transformers media, but I know Dasha is an amazing author, so I finally got around to reading their Xenoethnography series, about a human anthropologist who gets hired by the Transformers to both explain humans to them and also to explain them to humans. It is PHENOMENALLY good: https://archiveofourown.org/series/913458

(The series is 363k and still going)
