[personal profile] glitteryv posting in [community profile] recthething
Every Thursday, we have a community recs post, just like this one, where you can drop a rec or five in the comments. This works great if you only have one rec and don't want to make a whole post for it, or if you don't have a DW account to make posts of your own, or if you're shy. ;)

(But don't forget, you can deffo make posts of your own seven days a week. :D!)

So what cool vid/fic/fanart/podfic have we discovered this week? Leave a comment below. Anon comment is enabled.

Summary:

a dog and his god.

and their mother.

Bookmarker's Notes:

One of the things - one of the many things - that I find fascinating about this series is the questions it asks about what faith and loyalty in an idea means and what consequences it has on people and the societies in which they live. Furthermore, in keeping with the big source of inspiration being Enlightenment philosophy, there are a lot of really intelligent questions about the Christian-style embodiment of Godhood.

And that is what I thought this fic takes up and plays with really well, including the difficult characterisation and the motivations of the inhabitants of the brothel in general and Dominic in particular. The fact that it chose a style well-suited to the character as well - elegant but not ornate in the way Mycroft talks - helps, rather than hinders things and makes this a very enjoyable read.

after the silence has returned (2048 words) by Fahye
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Hannibal (TV)
Rating: Mature
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Will Graham/Hannibal Lecter
Additional Tags: Canon-Typical Culinary Cannibalism
Summary:

"It bothers me less than I thought it would," Will says; truth for truth. "But I've seen a hell of a lot of blood in my life. This is--this is nothing. To either of us."

"It is not nothing," Hannibal says, warm like a gas flame.

Bookmarker's Notes:

The culinary cannibalism (or the thrill of its suspected existence) is one of the things I enjoy the most about canon, together with how meals help to negotiate and set up relationships. This fic just goes and continues this by having blood freely given as a source of shared food be the conduit that transforms - or, dare I say it - transubstantiates - from the potential and possible intimacy canon provides - into an actual physical relationship.

The fic perfectly continues the themes and tone of canon in a tightly-focused story that is very highly recommended.

a practical application of medicine (and perspectives of the heart) (20463 words) by chakrafruit
Chapters: 6/6
Fandom: Naruto
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Uchiha Sasuke/Uzumaki Naruto

Summary:

Tsunade’s words slice as sharp as a scalpel, each one sliding into the softest parts of him with lethal accuracy. “Don’t forget that Sasuke might not want to return willingly,” she says evenly. “You must be prepared to kill him first.”

“And then,” she adds, “you can use what you have learnt to save him.”

Under the Fifth Hokage’s tutelage, as Tsunade’s apprentice, Uzumaki Naruto learns the art of healing.Bookmarker's Notes:

I have to admit that, going into this fanfic, I had very mixed feelings about Naruto/Sasuke as a pairing. On the whole, Sasuke and Naruto are two of the characters I care about the least in canon, and so I have avoided the pairing for the most part.

But I really enjoyed this fic and how it handles canon and its aftermath, precisely because it acknowledges how hard and multi-layered healing must be for a world as shaped and scarred by war as the shinobi world is. And the details and the way it weaves together the characters and their voices makes it nigh-on perfect as a starting point for reading NaruSaku. Highly recommended for sceptics like me.

This is an awesome story with great characterisation and very well-rendered voices and cultural details. And when you realise just what Feanor must have been working on... I particularly love the description of the Valier and the interaction between Aule and Yavanna. A highly recommended read!

Kaoru Kamiya, whose family was on the losing side, has been sold into marriage for the sake of peace. Her new husband is a legend, a demon bound in human form, marked by his blood-lust and his bright red hair...

Bookmarker's Notes:

I finished this fic in two days, that's how awesome it is. I love that it is accessible both if you know the canon and if you don't. It uses period details to good effect and is historically accurate. Furthermore, it also features great character voices for all its characters and great well-rounded OCs.

The Least of All Possible Mistakes (118090 words) by rageprufrock
Chapters: 12/12
Fandom: Sherlock (TV)
Rating: Mature
Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Series: Part 1 of Mistakes
Summary:

If ever a people deserved tasering, it’s Holmeses.

Bookmarker's Notes:

When reading Sherlock fic, I tend to gravitate away from Sherlock and Watson, often because I find the other character just so much more interesting than the two leads. This fic compounds this interest by focusing a female version of DI Lestrade that is both similar to her canon twin and her own person, shaped by what it means to be a professional woman in the world and in the Met. This change has consequences for how we see other female characters - Anthea as much as Sally, Mrs Holmes as much as Molly and Irene - throughout the fic. And it has consequences for how we see the men in this world - from John and Sherlock to Moriarty and Mycroft.

At first, the romance with Mycroft starts gently and its familiar beats almost lulled me into believing I knew where this was going and what the stops would look like. But the last hundred pages take what canon glosses over (the gaps between series 2 and 3) and explores it in a way that takes seriously the emotional toll Sherlock's faking his death leaves on those closest to him while not taking their agency away.

Highly recommended as an exploration of a well-executed cisgender-swap can broaden and enhance the canon it speaks to.
