In case some of you are inclined to indulge in this kind of delight during Passion Week, I've got an absolute treat for you:

Six More Miles (to Zion) (2024 words) by liriaen
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Bible (New Testament)
Rating: Mature
Warnings: Major Character Death
Relationships: Judas/Jesus Christ
Characters: Jeshua, Judas
Additional Tags: Bibleslash
Summary: What now, should my lion have turned into a quivering lamb?

(Zook says: The warning for Major Character Death shouldn't surprise anyone, right?)

Personally, I think this can be read being either a Christian or an agnostic-- but if the very thought of Jesus having relationships is not up your alley, you maybe shouldn't read this. Which means you'd miss out on paragraphs like the opening:

To this day I wonder. I think of you, and I wonder.

You're nowhere to be found and my thoughts touch you not. Mankind still invokes your name for every sort of treachery, even now, when all that is left of you is a Juda-shaped absence. A hole in the cloth of creation. I would reach out and mend it - mend you - but you are gone from me. And to this day, I mourn you.

Believe me when I say that I never meant to break you. But I did, asking the impossible, first reining you in, then setting you free, and when all was said and done you went and knotted a noose from your zeal, tightened it with hope and slung it over the love you bore me. All that was needed was a little push.

I remember it well. You balked and wailed like a maiden, clutching the hem of my garment. What now, I whispered, running fingers through your hair, should my lion have turned into a quivering lamb?

[personal profile] liriaen 's writing here is brilliant, haunting and tasteful; the POV is alternating between first and second person. If you're not fumbling for a hanky by the end of the story I don't know what would. Enjoy! :D

First, here is a jaw-droppingly gorgeous Nimona vid. The song choice is PERFECT and the editing is wonderful.

Additional Tags: Fanvids, Embedded Video, This movie is trans as hell and I love it, Body Image, This vid is the literal product of a fever dream so I hope it's as coherent to others as it is to me, anyway I love this song and how it talks about the inherent horror of having a corporeal body, But I'm more interested in how other people treat Nimona and talk about her body, and how they all expect her to be as repulsed by it as they are, Song: Body Terror Song (AJJ)
Summary:

I'm so sorry that the world has decided to punish Nimona for having a body.

And, from the same vidder, here's a wonderful vid for Klinger from MASH

Fandom: Our Flag Means Death
Ship: Izzy Hands/Calico Jack
Medium: Fic
Length: 7403 words
Rating: Explicit
My Tags: pwp, romance, happy ending, established relationship, au: modern, roleplay, medical kink, object insertion, sex toys, orgasm control, bdsm, watersports, backstory
Summary: Jack and Izzy—having first met when Jack was a patient on the hospital ward where Izzy worked—enjoy some kinky doctor's office roleplay.

Author's Excerpt:
“I’ll be performing the procedure, Mr Rackham,” informs the nurse dourly. “Then the doctor will review the report I write.”

“Oh,” sighs Jack, almost laughing with relief. “Cool, yeah, sweet.”

“Due to the invasive nature of the procedure, we like to give our patients as much privacy as possible. In this case, that means one-on-one treatment.”

“Right,” says Jack. “I should probably know your name, then.”

Does the nurse flush at that? Maybe. He’s looking down at the chicken scratch he’s hastily etching across the paper on his clipboard. “Izzy, but you will address me as Nurse when speaking to me.”

“Yes, Nurse,” Jack says, fast and breathless. “Thank you.”

This is tagged "Jack's body is a machine that converts trauma into psychosexual responses" and that (and the punny title - there is sounding) perfectly encapsulates up what I love about it. The story is funny, hot, and also deftly weaves in the origin of Jack's scars in this universe and the backstory of his relationship with Izzy.

Five Figure Fanwork Exchange ([community profile] fffx ) produced a bumper crop of fic this year! And I am sliding in with my recs at the last minute before they de-anonymize, because I ahve been tired and worn and have had very little brain space for reading anything but old favorites in the last several weeks. I highly encourage you to go read through the collection, because my recs are affected by the fact that I was not able to read as many as I would have otherwise done. (The less mental energy I have, the less widely I read.)

I recieved an absolutely AMAZING fic in the Moon Knight fandom. This was absolutely delightful. I particularly loved the way it took my expectations and turned them upside down.

The Valleys Where Shadows Dwell (14663 words) by Anonymous

Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Steven Grant & Jake Lockley & Marc Spector, Layla El-Faouly & Steven Grant & Jake Lockley & Marc Spector, Layla El-Faouly/Steven Grant/Marc Spector

Additional Tags: Psychological Drama, Hallucinations, Ancient Egyptian Literature & Mythology, Mission Fic, Superheroes
Summary:

Layla wants to understand Taweret better, and communicate with her better. She doesn't expect this to result in her taking a quick return back to Cairo to fight psychic monsters, but such is apparently the role of a superhero.

Two recs from FFFX, a 10k+ fic exchange. Anonymous because authors are not yet revealed. Originally posted at my journal.

Original Work
Tying Knots With Wind
Prince sent in Diplomatic Marriage/Chief of Nomadic People, 23k. I'm a sucker for the arranged or political marriage trope, and this is my favorite that I've read in a long, long time, not so much for the romance as for our main character discovering a whole new culture and his journey of finding a place in the world that he fits, which he never had at home. I really enjoyed all the worldbuilding around the nomadic plains peoples, too.

Sunshine - Robin McKinley
So All The Things Can Grow
Sunshine/Mel/Con (pre-ship), 18k. Post-book, Sunshine recovers, tries to figure out what shape her life is now, and how Con and Mel fit into it. I've always been interested in these characters as a triad, but given who and what Con is, it clearly was going to take some work, and I don't think I've read a fic before that really dug into that until this one. Everyone's points of view are great, written with a delicate touch and true to who they are in the books, and there are some delightful little worldbuilding surprises that feel absolutely in keeping with canon. Just really good and very satisfying.

Top Gun
The Edge of Heaven
Ice/Mav, 12k. While rehabbing from a mission-related injury, Mav gets a surprise visit from Ice. It's not exactly the reunion either of them were expecting. But it just might be the fresh start the both of them need. Great messy relationship dynamics, A++ pining, very satisfying resolution.

Fandom: Our Flag Means Death
Character: Izzy Hands
Medium: Art
Length: 1 piece
Rating: General/SFW
My Tags: character study, ambiguous ending, portrait, identity, denial/repression, gender, sexuality
Artist's Caption: I just love him so much, he’s so paintable 😭🥰

Description:
A layered digital portrait combining a full-colour depiction of Izzy Hands's drag look from the episode "Calypso's Birthday" (2x06) with a blue monochrome version of the character from what appears to be the duel in "The Art of Fuckery" (1x06). The monochrome paint is flaking away from the surface, baring gold seams reminiscent of kintsugi as Izzy sheds his skin to reveal the colours beneath. His mouth is open, season 1 Izzy shouting angrily while season 2 Izzy sings his torch song. One of his eyes is still covered, full of pain, while the one that's been bared seems to be looking forward more clearly.

This is just a fantastic idea, executed gorgeously. It captures an entire character journey in one striking image, wrapping up one of my single favourite scenes of the show in a perfect metaphor.

sholio: Tosh, Ianto, and Gwen (Torchwood-team)
[personal profile] sholio
A couple of random recs for things I've seen and liked lately!

Death as a Habit (Torchwood, 2K, canon pairings)
Really sweet "everyone lives" AU focused on Tosh, Owen, and Ianto, with a pregnant (and adorable) Tosh, and Ianto having trouble coping with the idea that he never expected to live this long.

Hang On Sloopy by [youtube.com profile] estellemccartney (Fanvid, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood)
Caveats: I haven't seen the movie, so I don't know how closely this vid tracks with what's actually in it, and I know that some people are violently allergic to a) Brad Pitt, and b) the way Tarentino films women, and this vid has a lot of both. But I really enjoyed it and found it bouncily rewatchable; I feel like it captures a certain vintage Feel in a way that I liked.

Untitled Andhera by [tumblr.com profile] alfheimr
Fandom: Dimension 20: A Court of Fey & Flowers
Character: Andhera
Medium: Art
Length: 1 piece
Rating: General/SFW
My Tags: character study, ambiguous ending, portrait, clothing, magic
Artist's Caption: frankly obsessed with a court of fey and flowers 👍

Description:
A textured and stylized colour portrait of dark archfey Prince Andhera from the waist up. We see him from behind, his eyes downcast as he reaches toward the brightly glowing elemental shard embedded in the back of his neck. Wisps of rain cloud begin to form around him, countered by halos of gold.

One of the things I love most about Dimension 20 is how its series are always very funny, often downright ridiculous, but always allow space for depth and the whole range of human feeling in their characters. On top of being visually stunning, this piece really captures the vulnerability and instilled discomfort with his emotions that are some of the most moving aspects of Andhera (our slipperiest of boys).

Paterfamilias by [archiveofourown.org profile] severinne
Fandom: Life on Mars
Ship: Gene Hunt/Sam Tyler
Medium: Fic
Length: 3919 words
Rating: Explicit
My Tags: drama, happy ending, established relationship, jealousy/possessiveness, bdsm, daddy kink, dirty talk, rough sex, altered state
Author's Summary: Gene misinterprets Sam’s daddy issues in the most inappropriate way possible.

Excerpt:
He gripped the kitchen counter at his back, still wobbly at the knees in spite of a rapidly killed buzz, and wondered if this is what Gene had felt, back in the woods.

Seeing Gene properly for the first time since the start of this uneven conversation, Sam could recognize the effects of too much whisky in his stance, in the unrestrained flashing of his eyes. Yet even pissed, Gene had remarkable control, the gun in his hand held steady and sure, the muzzle lightly touching the hollow of his throat without the slightest tremor.

‘Not nice, is it, Sam?’ The barrel traveled slowly up his neck to his jaw, almost caressing in time to Gene’s languid speech. ‘Not nice when someone you trust points a gun at you…’

‘Gene…’

‘But do you trust me? Do you?’

This is a hot, twisty, and feelings-ful story in which Gene mistakes Sam's strange behaviour around Vic Tyler as daddy kink instead of time travel daddy issues and shows up at his flat drunk and emotionally compromised to prove that he can give Sam what he needs. This is the platonic of a character-driven PWP for me, where the smut is compelling and interesting to read on its own but also establishes something equally compelling about each character involved and moves them together from one place at the start of the story to somewhere else entirely by the end of it.

Copied from my journal:
It is a lovely day in the Unseen University library, and you are a horrible goose. Crossover, Discworld and Untitled Goose Game. Death, Librarian, and horrible goose. G, 450.
A quick read, and a funny one. You don't need to be able to speak either Goose or Librarian to know exactly what troubles are happening XD.

And the Wind is Surely Rising. Original Work. Sentient liner ship, ghost sister ship. T, 600.
A nicely shivery piece that puts an ominous spin on the thought of 'forever family'.

Playful. Original Work. Dragon, Kitten. G, art.
This art is very adorably cute. I love how the kitten and dragon are looking at each other.

And Many More. Babylon 5. Marcus/Stephen. T, 4K.
Excellent humor and teasing. Marcus is wonderfully dramatic, Stephen is both nervous and hopeful. A lovely get-together fic.

Appearances. Firefly. Mal, Simon. T, 700.
Mal's voice is spot-on, Simon's is also well done, and the hints and mentions of the rest of the crew also fit right into canon. I'd very happily read more of this. (Author has put an ot3 tag on, but this reads pure gen to me.)

That Eerie Song You Sing. Justified. Boyd, Rachel, Raylan. G, 1.5K.
Nicely spooky, very well described and imagined. Nice to see a fic from Rachel's POV.

I <3 U. Sesame Street. Bert/Ernie. G, art.
Wonderfully done. The art style was absolutely perfect for this fandom, and I just cannot get over Rubber Ducky's carrot-top hat.

Look At All the Bugs We Found. Project Hail Mary. Ryland. G, 1.3K.
Q&A format, and very clever. I especially liked the use of powers of six for specifically expressing humanly vague numbers.

Perimeter. Original Work. Post-apocalypse survivor, pre-apocalypse war robot. T, 1.7K.
Vivid! Ambiguous and uncertain, well-written and leaving you with things to contemplate. I really enjoyed this.

Lily/Amanda, 5k. Mark haunts Lily, and Amanda helps her figure out what to do about it. This is a fun, low-key horror fic with bonus getting-together, ie a bunch of my favorite things for one of my favorite ships. Just a fun time.

Pern
Bronze and Gold
Kylara/Lessa pre-ship, 2k. Kylara Impresses bronze instead of gold, but she's not going to let that stop her from accomplishing her aims. I truly cannot get enough of this premise, and I love the image of Kylara and Lessa having mildly awkward bonding sessions.

Crimson Peak
Bright
Lucille/Edith, drabble. A satisfyingly bitter little character study. :D

Saltburn
milk for gall
Oliver/Felix, 1.5k Was this what the baying hound felt like, leading his rider, chasing the fox? The rider had the gun, but he was led by the dog. Who was the master and who was the servant? The only Saltburn fic I've read so far, but it's a good one! I love this twisted dynamic, where Felix is not just an object of desire but an active participant in Oliver's games and an active agent in his own corruption.

Ship: Fang/Frenchie/Izzy Hands
Medium: Art
Length: 1 piece
Rating: General/SFW
My Tags: romance, happy ending, established relationship, kissing, physical affection, smoking
Artist's Caption: oh, go on then.

Description:
A limited palette drawing of Izzy surrendering to kisses from Fang and Frenchie. Izzy is in the middle, his arms around both men and a lit cigarette tucked between his fingers as he hunches down, seeming to laugh despite himself. Fang is going in low to kiss the corner of Izzy's mouth, while Frenchie is holding Izzy by the chin to kiss the tattoo on his cheekbone.

I started having feelings about these three together from the moment I saw the promotional still of Fang hugging Izzy while Frenchie holds Izzy's hand, and this is the sweetest follow-up to that scene I could have asked for. The loose, sketchy style gives so much character and movement to this piece and backs up the caption perfectly. You can almost feel Izzy initially having leaned away from the attention and ducked his head, only to give in and put his arms around Fang and Frenchie as they adorably persisted or just made too tempting a pair to refuse. Fang and Frenchie having to stoop down but still fitting naturally into Izzy's embrace is a lovely detail.

I posted the following here but in case it doesn't get approved, and to spread the recs among a wider audience, I'm crossposting it here:

Have a multifandom set of recs. Some are shippy but over half are gen, and they vary wildly in length. The one commonality is that they are among the very best in their respective fandoms, in my opinion.

1. http://archiveofourown.org/works/12245919
[Leverage] Feels Like Home by daniellemydear (80k, Mature)
Slow burn Eliot/Parker, with hilariously accurate characterization and lines. Laugh, cry, sigh happily, you get all of the above with this fic.

2. https://archiveofourown.org/works/52010518
[Lois & Clark:TNAOS] Fictitious Persons by classicalgal (146k, General Audiences)
An AU focusing on Kara Kent, who happens to be the daughter of Clark and Lois… who ends up in a world where Superman is a fictional character. Child character-focused but very, very well-done and the story is very compelling. You can read it even if you don’t know L&C; all you need is the basic idea of Superman and you’re good. Gen.

3. http://archiveofourown.org/works/29793855
[The Matrix] The Dream Chronicles by Trin303 (75k, Mature)
Funny yet also serious AU focusing on Neo/Trinity with a happier ending than the first film. (Dreams are, obviously, a huge part of the story setup.)

4. http://archiveofourown.org/works/210087
[Rizzoli & Isles] The End of the World by romana2525 (3k, Teen and Up Audiences)
Apocalyptic AU set sometime after S1, focusing on Jane and Maura (pre-ship but the bond is there). The ending makes me want to cry in a good way.

5. https://archiveofourown.org/works/318935
[Rookie Blue] Deep by surreallis (12k, Explicit)
Fantastic AU where Andy goes undercover with Sam (with predictable shippy results). The ending is the best!

6. https://archiveofourown.org/works/569661
[Sue Thomas F.B.Eye] Breakfast Date by DKateri (5k, General Audiences)
A sweet missing scene in the middle of the S3 ep Adventures in Babysitting; Sue/Jack-focused.

7. https://archiveofourown.org/works/1361
[Lord of the Rings] The Long Road Home by Scribblesinink (Scribbler) (95k, Teen and Up Audiences)
A Boromir Lives! fic that is a wonderful tale of shame and redemption. Excellent for anyone who loves Boromir and wishes to see more of him. Gen.

8. https://archiveofourown.org/works/29464
[X-Men original movieverse] The Evolution of Jubilee by Mara (11k, General Audiences)
An excellent fic wherein Jubilee embarks on a crusade after taking a field trip to a museum. Gen.

9. https://archiveofourown.org/works/600324
[Push] …and that has made all the difference by maharetr (4k, General Audiences)
A great post-movie fic that’s a bit of emotional hurt/comfort and fluff, and just a wonderful feel-good ending. Gen.

10. http://archiveofourown.org/works/42983565
[The Fugitive film] The Anatomy of a Heartbreak Éclair by OrionLady (23k, Teen and Up Audiences)
Excellent post-film fic from Sam’s POV that deals with some PTSD and the building of an epic friendship. Gen.

I’d have come up with a slightly different set if the best fics for some fandoms were on AO3, but sadly some fandoms haven’t migrated over much, and their best fics are still hiding on other platforms.
