doranwen: reading one book is like eating one potato chip (Reading One Book)

I posted the following here but in case it doesn't get approved, and to spread the recs among a wider audience, I'm crossposting it here:

Have a multifandom set of recs. Some are shippy but over half are gen, and they vary wildly in length. The one commonality is that they are among the very best in their respective fandoms, in my opinion.

1. http://archiveofourown.org/works/12245919
[Leverage] Feels Like Home by daniellemydear (80k, Mature)
Slow burn Eliot/Parker, with hilariously accurate characterization and lines. Laugh, cry, sigh happily, you get all of the above with this fic.

2. https://archiveofourown.org/works/52010518
[Lois & Clark:TNAOS] Fictitious Persons by classicalgal (146k, General Audiences)
An AU focusing on Kara Kent, who happens to be the daughter of Clark and Lois… who ends up in a world where Superman is a fictional character. Child character-focused but very, very well-done and the story is very compelling. You can read it even if you don’t know L&C; all you need is the basic idea of Superman and you’re good. Gen.

3. http://archiveofourown.org/works/29793855
[The Matrix] The Dream Chronicles by Trin303 (75k, Mature)
Funny yet also serious AU focusing on Neo/Trinity with a happier ending than the first film. (Dreams are, obviously, a huge part of the story setup.)

4. http://archiveofourown.org/works/210087
[Rizzoli & Isles] The End of the World by romana2525 (3k, Teen and Up Audiences)
Apocalyptic AU set sometime after S1, focusing on Jane and Maura (pre-ship but the bond is there). The ending makes me want to cry in a good way.

5. https://archiveofourown.org/works/318935
[Rookie Blue] Deep by surreallis (12k, Explicit)
Fantastic AU where Andy goes undercover with Sam (with predictable shippy results). The ending is the best!

6. https://archiveofourown.org/works/569661
[Sue Thomas F.B.Eye] Breakfast Date by DKateri (5k, General Audiences)
A sweet missing scene in the middle of the S3 ep Adventures in Babysitting; Sue/Jack-focused.

7. https://archiveofourown.org/works/1361
[Lord of the Rings] The Long Road Home by Scribblesinink (Scribbler) (95k, Teen and Up Audiences)
A Boromir Lives! fic that is a wonderful tale of shame and redemption. Excellent for anyone who loves Boromir and wishes to see more of him. Gen.

8. https://archiveofourown.org/works/29464
[X-Men original movieverse] The Evolution of Jubilee by Mara (11k, General Audiences)
An excellent fic wherein Jubilee embarks on a crusade after taking a field trip to a museum. Gen.

9. https://archiveofourown.org/works/600324
[Push] …and that has made all the difference by maharetr (4k, General Audiences)
A great post-movie fic that’s a bit of emotional hurt/comfort and fluff, and just a wonderful feel-good ending. Gen.

10. http://archiveofourown.org/works/42983565
[The Fugitive film] The Anatomy of a Heartbreak Éclair by OrionLady (23k, Teen and Up Audiences)
Excellent post-film fic from Sam’s POV that deals with some PTSD and the building of an epic friendship. Gen.

I’d have come up with a slightly different set if the best fics for some fandoms were on AO3, but sadly some fandoms haven’t migrated over much, and their best fics are still hiding on other platforms.

This is sort of an unusual list - all of these are WIPs, and most are really old and will never be completed. But some people (*cough*me*cough*) are willing to read even permanently unfinished fics because they can be enjoyable, so I'm sharing them here. If you can't stand WIPs, then this post most definitely is not for you!

As always, ratings are all converted to a single system for convenience:
Fanfiction.net - G through R
AO3 - PG through X (though the occasional child-friendly fic I mark G)
anything without a rating (AO3 or other site) - Unrated

I listed any ships I thought were major below each fic. If there are any minor/background ships you want to avoid, please leave a comment and ask for a list to be made for you. Note that ships may refer to one-sided or unrequited ones as well as to requited/mutual.

My favorite WIPs, all Matrix )

and the rest of the WIPs:

Alphas )

Push )

Rizzoli & Isles [TV] / Rookie Blue )

The Matrix )

If any of the links above no longer work, please let me know so I can flag them as "Dead" in my database, thanks!

Enjoy! :)

These are all the fics from miscellaneous fandoms and crossovers that didn't fit in my other posts. All complete, not flagged in my database for anything in particular.

As always with my db-generated lists, ratings are all converted to a single system for convenience:
Fanfiction.net - G through R
AO3 - PG through X (though the occasional child-friendly fic I mark G)
anything without a rating (AO3 or other site) - Unrated

There are few enough of these that it wasn't too hard to put ships - most of them are unusual enough that I remembered what they were about.

Chronicles of Narnia [books] / Lord of the Rings [books] )

Deep Impact )

Gold Diggers )

Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman / Smallville )

Smallville / The Pretender )

Stick It (2006) )

Misc. Crossovers )

If any of the links above no longer work, please let me know so I can flag them as "Dead" in my database, thanks!

Enjoy! :)

So I realized the other day that all those rec posts I posted back in September… only featured fics I had marked as favorites (ones I'd like to re-read). That actually is not the same thing as well-written fics, as I have some I like that I have to admit aren't very well-written, and there are very well-written fics that just don't appeal to me for whatever reason. (I liked them enough to read through them and save them, it just means I probably won't re-read them very much if at all.) I went through my fanfic database and added a separate marking for the ones that I thought were very well-written, whether or not they were on my favorites lists. These had to strike me as exceptionally well-written, not just decent. You may disagree with my choices, and that's fine. :) But you can rest assured that any on this list are not riddled with SPAG errors, and show a good command of the English language, even if the style isn't always your thing.

I created a query of just the ones that were very well-written but NOT on my favorites list, for whatever reason, and I wanted to showcase them here. Just because they're not something I want to re-read a bunch doesn't mean they shouldn't be noticed and appreciated by someone, and hopefully one of these will appeal to you! Please kudos/comment as you feel comfortable doing for them, and enjoy! (Most of these are pretty tiny fandoms, but that's a function of what I've got in my database so far.)

Most of these I don't recall off the top of my head what they are about in order to describe them, but I put what notes I do remember. If you need a recs list that's more tailored (to avoid a particular theme or whatnot), please let me know - one of the major bonuses of using a database is that I can create all manner of queries to select just what I want.

Ratings are taken from the fics themselves and adapted to a combined rating system in my database, with ff.n fics getting G through R, and AO3 fics getting G/PG to X. AO3 fics and those on blogs without ratings are marked Unrated.

Alphas )

Anthropomorphic )

Deep Impact )

Fried Green Tomatoes )

Push )

Rookie Blue )

The Matrix )

Hope someone enjoys some of these!

I don't have a lot of rarepairs to recommend, as either the fandoms are so rare that any fic for it is rare, or the rarepair fics were not my favorites for various reasons, but here's a handful of excellent ones.

[Alphas - Lee/Rachel] Six Kisses of Rachel Pirzad by Teyerin (3468 words)
At first the idea of this relationship raised my eyebrows very high - but by the time I finished reading, I was smiling at it. It's an interesting one!

[Rookie Blue - Dov/Gail] To hell with it by JadeSelena (7654 words)
A S2 fix-it for a pairing the show only used as a means of breaking up Chris/Gail. (What a waste of screen time when you could have this!)

[Rookie Blue - Dov/Gail/Chris] A Series Of (Un)fortunate Events by amathela (8290 words)
Not only are there very few fics for these three together, this fic has them as a poly vee ship, which is a rare version in the fandoms I've read so far (admittedly, I haven't seen a ton of poly ships in my favorite fandoms), with Gail as the pivot. It's all very fluffy.

[Sue Thomas F.B.Eye - Myles/Tara] WNE 1: Weekend in New England by aubreysmom (23459 words)
This fic was the one that got me to see the potential in Myles/Tara. I've seen those two that way ever since. It's not *exactly* shippy but it feels shippy enough to me, and the sequel to it is most definitely shippy. (You can find the sequel from the author's profile, but it's definitely a part 2 of 3, and they never wrote the third… This one can stand on its own.)

The rarest of rarepairs for STFBE I would share a link to (it's a Myles/Sue fic!!!), but it was only hosted on RomanticFanfiction.com (which went down years ago) and since one had to log in to read the fics there, none of them were saved in the Wayback Machine. Back in the day I painstakingly copied it into an epub to re-read (and I'm really glad I did, now), because it's super well-written. It was called Surrogate and written by JoM. Mentioning here out of honor for the rarity and the great writing.

[X-Men Original Movieverse - Scott/Ororo] Loss of Composure series by Diana / Titaniafae / Dee / viscerate (no wordcount available)
I've seen this author's stuff in at least three or four different places with a different name each time, so I'm really not sure which nick they prefer! But no matter which it is, this series is really well-done and was one of a tiny handful of fics that taught me to love Scott/Ororo. I linked to the overall fanfic page because it has the whole series all linked together there and in the correct reading order, and the fics themselves aren't linked one to each other.

Happy reading!

I can't count the number of times I've read these fics… I've got lots of favorites, but all of the ones on this list are ones I will just browse to on my hard drive (I save everything I like reading) and pull up to read, because I remember the author and title straight off, lol.

I left out anything that was a perma-WIP, or where I couldn't pick even just *one* of the many fics I love by an author. Those are better suited for a thorough recs post on another day.

Leverage )

The Lord of the Rings (books) )

The Matrix )

The Pretender )

Rizzoli & Isles )

Rookie Blue )

Smallville )

Sue Thomas F.B.Eye )

X-Men Original Movieverse )

I ended up skipping Alphas and Push entirely because as much as I enjoy re-reading fics from those fandoms, I have a lot of "I love reading these" rather than a few really strong standouts - or in the case of Alphas, I have one that I'm saving for the rarepair post I'll get to another day.

And I couldn't even *try* to come up with a list for Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman. I've read and re-read SO MANY of the fics over the years (it was one of my first fandoms) that the list would be ridiculously long. Suffice it to say, I'll have to make a recs list just for that fandom sometime. But that might be a while, lol.

I was going to do all the weekly themes in one but fanvids are kind of their own thing, so here are a bunch of my favorite fanvids for a ton of fandoms, and I'll get to the fics later.

All totally SFW as far as I know (though the Alphas and Rookie Blue ones do have some making out in them).

tomorrow, when the war began || it's a brave new world
Fantastic TWTWB movie vid to the song "This is War" by 30 Seconds to Mars. It's got some interesting coloring, nice cuts, and is way deeper if you've read the books and know what's going to happen with the different characters.

Alphas TV
An Alphas fanvid with the idea that you're watching TV and changing the channel, so there are different song choices to different parts of it. Uses songs such as "Have a Nice Day" by Bon Jovi, the Imperial March theme from Star Wars (by John Williams), and Adagio for Strings by Samuel Barber. Ranges from hilarious to heartbreaking.

Idgie and Ruth Love Story Fried Green Tomatoes (FGT)
A well-done video for Fried Green Tomatoes showing the relationship between Idgie and Ruth to Taylor Swift's Love Story.

Leave Me Hypnotized, Love [Push]
One of multiple Push fanvids made to this song (featured in the film) and focusing on Nick/Cassie.

Rizzoli & Isles - Crazy Jane
A funny Rizzoli & Isles vid to Crazy Jane by Dizzy Balloon. The song is too perfect for Jane Rizzoli, lol.

Andy McNally and Sam Swarek ~ Crash and Burn
A lovely Rookie Blue fanvid for the Andy/Sam ship to Savage Garden's Crash and Burn.

Éomer's Bootcamp (I'll Make a Man Out of You)
A very funny LOTR video to the song from Mulan. If you've seen the LOTR films and you've never seen this video, you have to change that right away. :D

LOTR - music video -Fallin
A blast from the past, this LOTR video was reposted in 2007 and made years before that, probably just after the first film came out (note that it isn't remotely hi-def; the version I have on my hdd, which is the original size, was 320x240 - best to watch from a distance if you can't shrink Youtube's version small enough). It's set to Falling by K-Otic and features the Fellowship falling over, and over, and over… :D

One Step At a Time - Women's Murder Club (Cindy)
You'll need to find a way to stretch this back to landscape somehow (download from Youtube and watch with VLC is my recommendation), but it's a great Women's Murder Club video focusing on Cindy and using Jordin Sparks' song One Step at a Time.

Lois & Clark fanvid - That's All - season 1
Very well-done Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman vid to the tune of That's All by Genesis. I particularly love all the newspaper bits.

And I posted my favorite Leverage fanvids in a comment to a community recs post earlier, but I reposted that to my own DW to save my recs, so if anyone didn't see them before, here they are.
