  1. [Vid] Rebels Rising by condnsdmlk. A reminder that it's Star Wars and that the Rebellion lives. A great ride.

  2. Hercule Polycule by Kerguelen. So fun to watch! The song alone would make you laugh but the perfect choices throughout to set up Poirot, Hastings and Japp in this jaunty little vid is a delight to canon fan and non-fan alike.

  3. Murderbot's Law by pendrecarc. Captures Murderbot's voice very well and is a nice mini-adventure.

  4. [FANVID] So Emotional by Emcee1138. "A tribute to Spock and all of the people who love him." Spock across the different series. That shrug at 8 seconds in -- HA!

  5. Explosions by PoliticalPadmé (magnetgirl). An excellent look at the connections and conflicts across the Star Wars generations with some striking transitions and matched shots across films.

A few recs in various fandoms from [community profile] raremaleslashex, based on my first quick perusal of the offerings!

Six Feet Deep (Gattaca, Vincent/Eugene, 1400 wds)
In which Jerome Eugene Morrow has a swimming pool in his basement.

Sweet, painful, sharply characterized, and really feels like them. (Warning for canon-typical suicidal ideation.)

There were TWO Ben/Shaw werewolf fics for Ben January, as there should be, so I'm reccing them together, as they're both really good with good character voices and a perfect fit with their respective parts of canon:

the moon that breaks the night (1600 wds)
Missing scene (with werewolves) for Death and Hard Cider with sweet h/c and established relationship.

A Promise to the Moon (1000 wds)
Missing scene for The Shirt on His Back with strong action scenes and get-together.

And a real standout for me in a fandom I don't normally read:

(Another) Resolution (Magnum P.I. (1980), Magnum/Higgins, 3100 wds)
After an injury, Magnum returns to Robin's Nest with Lily. Higgins has a plan for what Magnum should do next.

This fic absolutely nails the character voices and the general feel and style of canon, including its deadpan humor and Magnum's general tendency to talk around emotional subjects. It also has a very canon-appropriate get-together, an explanation for Robin Masters that makes an impressive amount of sense, and even a sympathetic Agatha cameo. I really liked it.

All of these are fics I read in the past month and added to my fanfic database. Haven't had time to read much, but there's a nice selection of Matrix fics. Most are quite porny, but the ratings make that pretty clear if you're trying to find or avoid that. :)

I haven't read widely in the Summer of Horror collection yet, but here are some things I've enjoyed so far!

Nor Any Drop (Biggles books (WE Johns), gen, 12K)
Blowing up the reservoir has more consequences than Biggles expected. AU of Biggles Flies East.

This is possibly one of the tensest fanfic reading experiences I have EVER had, due in part to having absolutely no idea who (if anyone) was going to survive and how (if so) they possibly could survive. The horror element is absolutely horrific but in a low-key way that's more psychologically horrifying than splattery/gory. If you don't know the canon, I think you could probably read this as original fiction and pretend they're OC WWI spies on opposite sides. If this was an original horror story, it would be a very good one IMHO.

On and On and On (Archie comics, gen, 1400 wds)
It's another sunny day in Riverdale, and Archie is heading into the woods with his friends. Surely the witch he's heard so much about doesn't really live there too...

This one has a really excellent, chilling twist that works wonderfully with the canon and I absolutely did not see coming.

Sokovia, still (Falcon & the Winter Soldier, gen, 1200 wds)
Although it had fallen, Sokovia refused to go quietly.

I think it's the matter-of-factness that makes this one so chilling: yes, Sokovia is full of ghosts; no, there's nothing to be done about it, any more than the tragedy that created them can be fixed. You just have to deal with it and move on. I love the sense of ... I don't even really know what to call it, jaded despair that permeates this story.

The Three-Eyed Shadow (Yu Yu Hakusho, Hiei & Yukina gen, 2800 wds)
Yukina is kidnapped in Makai before she manages to reach the human world. Things go... a little differently.

A little detour into one of my very old fandoms! Yukina's story is tragic enough in canon (she's an ice maiden whose tears are jewels, who is kidnapped and tortured to make her cry to cause her captors to become rich; all of that is actual canon) and this is a turn-left-at-canon AU take on that. The descriptions of her situation are very vivid and chilling, and this variation on her rescue takes things in a very different direction than canon.

And I was completely thrilled with my gifts! Both are for the Biggles book series.

Red as Blood (Biggles books, Biggles/von Stalhein, 3000 wds)
A deliciously dark, atmospheric and vivid Beauty and the Beast tale with really nice character/relationship arcs and a powerful ending.

Still and White (Biggles/von Stalhein, 4200 wds)
Snowbound in a castle with a ghost! Eerie, haunting (literally and figuratively) and sometimes charmingly funny, with a wonderful and chilling coda.

Every Thursday, we have a community post, just like this one, where you can drop a rec or five in the comments.

This works great if you only have one rec and don't want to make a whole post for it, or if you don't have a DW account, or if you're shy. ;)

(But don't forget: you can deffo make posts of your own seven days a week. ;D!)

This is just a reminder that we always welcome themed recs, for example recs from a recently-revealed exchange or fest collection. (Or not-so-recently, for that matter!)

[community profile] fandom5k works just revealed, and [community profile] multifandomdoodle, [community profile] seasonsofdrabbles, [personal profile] summerofhorrorexchange, and [community profile] raremaleslashex will all be open for reading and viewing soon, just to name a few! If you're browsing any of those collections and find something great, please come share it here at [community profile] recthething. Recs during and after the anon period are both fine. The more the merrier!

A Fire Within by Kiraly

This was written for 2022's round of Jukebox Exchange, where the idea is to write a story inspired by a song. This one was inspired by "Now Hiring" by Dr. Awkward ft. Schaffer the Darklord; familiarity with the source isn't required in order to enjoy the story.

Fic details: M/M, rated Teen, length 19k. Features superheroes, enemies (sort of) to lovers, crack treated seriously, and a bit of fake/pretend relationship.

Author's summary:

EXPERIENCED HERO seeking MORTAL FOE - part time, flexible hours (Greater Townsboro)
Are you looking to match wits and take some hits? Do you need a beacon of truth, justice, and incredibly tight spandex pants to keep your dastardly plots in check? Are you available weeknights from 6-9 pm, occasional weekends by mutual agreement? Read on for more information.
--
A superhero who can't keep a nemesis decides to put out a personal ad. A villain with a troubled past decides to start over in a new town. What could possibly go wrong?

I found it a light and fun read; builds up the characters and worldbuilding enough to sink some teeth into it, but without exceeding its welcome. Also, it's very funny at times - the banter and flirting is silly and delightful, and the author pulled off the inherently cracky aspect of the premise pretty well!

This is a great character-focused Drummer vid!

Fortunate One by [archiveofourown.org profile] runawaynun
Music: Fortunate Son - Sleater-Kinney
Footage: All of Drummer's seasons of The Expanse

Download and subtitle links available at the AO3 link.

It's a fierce, rocking Drummer vid focused on her various storylines, getting kicked and falling down and getting up again. A little background F/F for her canon pairing, otherwise gen.

The Daniel Blackland series by Greg van Eekhout is an obscure series of alt-history/urban fantasy heist novels from the mid-2010s with the rare distinction that a) all the fics in the fandom that I've found so far (all 4 of them) are really good, and b) all of it features my OTP. When does that ever happen?!

If you've never heard of these books, they're GREAT. In a magical alternate version of our world, magic is powered by consuming the bones of extinct creatures, Los Angeles is a canal city like Venice and also an independent country (actually two countries, North and South), and a small band of thieves plan a heist on a magical dictator's impregnable vault, while a bureaucrat working for the corrupt government tries to stop them and then gets sucked into a revolution aimed at overthrowing the horrible dystopia they all live in, and rescues a slave along the way .... guess who my favorite characters are. Start with California Bones. I wrote it up along with a primer for my OTP here.

The two long(er) ones:

San Andreas Aftermath by Rivine (13K words)
Set a few months after the end of the series, this absolutely delightful, plotty post-canon fic centers around a fake marriage get-together but also lets the whole cast shine and includes a canon-typical heist with a lot of magical shenanigans. Very much in keeping with the tone and style of the books except with more gay sex.

The Retirement of Gabriel Argent by Sixthlight (5K words)
Set a couple of decades after the end of the series, a lovely getting-old-together fic with about the closest thing to an HEA that these characters are capable of. I loved it.

The two short ones:

Timmy's Down the Well Again by Rivine (1K wds)
Short and iddy, just some really nice h/c including presumed dead and near-drowning.

Paper Risk by Rivine (2700 wds)
A year or so after California Bones, Gabriel takes steps to ensure that Max's past can't be used to blackmail either of them.
