Rectember: Red vs Blue fanvids

I have a whole playlist of favorites, but just to choose a few:

  • Blue Lips – (Blue Lips by Regina Spektor) – Church-focused

He took a step, but then felt tired
He said, "I'll rest a little while."
But when he tried to walk again
    He wasn't a child

  • Oh No – (Oh No! by Marina and the Diamonds) – Carolina-focused

Don't do love, don't do friends
    I'm only after success
    Don't need a relationship
    I'll never soften my grip

  • Riot – (Riot by Three Days Grace) – Project Freelancer-focused

If you feel so empty, so used up, so let down
If you feel so angry, so ripped off, so stepped on
You're not the only one refusing to back down
You're not the only one, so get up

You can check out the rest of my favorites here but be warned I happen to enjoy my angst, especially when it comes to Church/Tex.

Rectember: Rarepair (Hetalia, Germany/South Italy)

Staring at the Sun by VampireNaomi is a rarepair Hetalia fic between Germany and Romano that captured me instantly, at first because Germany being with the other Italy was an interesting concept to me, but then how the story unfolded made me not want it to end because I was having so much fun with it. This story single handedly made me wish there were more fics of this pair exactly like this one because it was just that good. I think the author was especially good at charactization and forming the relationship into something believable and heartwarming. There is no flaws in the execution of the AU and details within the story sells the idea of these two really being humans living in the time period selected. Being in Romano's head was such a treat too, he was amazing from start to finish, I loved him so much! This story is just 10k+ of pure goodness and worth giving a shot if you have any interest in this fandom or these characters, whether you like the couple or not. Trust me, you'll be singing the tune of this rarepair once you're finished reading, it's impossible not to. It was posted this year, but I still think it hasn't fully gotten the attention it deserves in the amount of time it has had, so go give it love if you're interested!

Here's the summary: It's 1962. The bitter humdrum of Lovino Vargas's life is broken by the arrival of a German tourist who's running away from something.

I didn't think I was going to have anything to rec since I don't bookmark stories I enjoyed all that often, so I'm glad I can participate this early on in the event with a story I was meaning to rec for awhile. :)

Rectember: Vids in spaaace

This was almost a Star Wars themed reclist, but the Imperial Radch series snuck in as well.

Ancillary Justice book trailer by bironic
A beautiful space opera for anyone who enjoys sci-fi and canon characters of colour. The fancast is perfect. Made me ache for a real movie adaptation of the series.

The Mandalorian by bachaboska
Fun Poe Dameron/Mando mashup. Did a great job matching up the background settings from both sets of footage. Also did a great job making me ship it in unexpected earnest.

Kylo Ren | Look What You Made Me Do by xpunshesx
Exactly as tongue-in-cheek as the title promises. I've watched it several times and it never fails to make me giggle.

Rey & Kylo || Empty Spaces by tstudios
This is a very shippy vid. You won't enjoy it if you don't like Reylo. If you do, though, it's gorgeous and distills all their violent chemistry into just a few minutes.

Rectember: Vid (hockey RPF)

Parachute (A Love Letter) by [archiveofourown.org profile] bexone
Hockey RPF, gen - San Jose Sharks ensemble, vid, SFW

This is both a vid and a work I've enjoyed many times. It's a beautiful summation of the Sharks' 2018-2019 season, with all the highs and lows, and it's well worth re-watching as I felt I got a better understanding each time through of the very deliberate grouping of the clips into themes and how they're paired with the verses of the song. But more than that, it's a fanwork about the experience of being a fan—about putting your happiness in the hands of others and hoping they'll come through, what an act of trust and affection and vulnerability and loyalty that is, and how rewarding it can be. I am never tired of re-watching this.

Rectember: [VID] Starships

"Starships - a multifandom space vid" by bironic. This vid gives me a lot of feelings about space and media set in space, and I love it. I've also rewatched it more than a few times, so it works for that theme as well. It's very nostalgic for me, though I think I only came across it a year or two ago.

Rectember - Vids (FF7, multi)

FF7R - No Resistance (Flobots/No Handlebars) - The original version of this has been one of my favorite FF7 vids for years now, and when I went to look it up for this post, I discovered the creator had remade it with new footage from FF7R! The song sends shivers down my spine every time - it really encapsulates some of the main conflicts of the game really well.

Multiple - Auriga (DJ Spoke/Watch Them Fall Down) - It's been over ten years since I first saw this video, and the editing still absolutely blows me away. The editor manages to take clips from a lot of different series with very different styles and blend them together really well, along with some A+ lip synching sections.

Multiple - Rock What You Got! (Superchick/So Beautiful) - A super fun girl-power vid! The song is fantastic, and I love the wide variety of series represented in it.

Rare Rectember Rerecs

4 recs for Critical Role, The Flash, RPF - NPR, & The Social Network - after the jump )

[VID] Trip Switch

"A droid vid" by colls. (Star Wars - All Media Types)

Combining both the vids and returned to often prompts, I was reminded of this vid by someone not long ago. And especially now that I've seen S7 of Clone Wars I think it could use an update for our brave droids. I say "update" even though the vid only came out in January!

Nonetheless I love this and have rewatched several times because what would we do without them and what kind of story would that be?

Rectember: Rare OT3: Peggy Carter/Anna Jarvis/Edwin Jarvis (Agent Carter TV)

The Shining Hour by [archiveofourown.org profile] lbmisscharlie

When I binged Agent Carter recently I didn't expect to fall for a rare pair, but such is my life. When I realized there were only 11 fics for this ship, I have to admit I was surprised. That said, my spirits were lifted a lot by this fic--10K! An absolute gem of a fic. Everything I want for these three in one spot. That won't stop me from wanting more, but honestly I just reread this when I want to remember what good poly fic looks like. ♥

Rectember: [Vid] Sam & Rowena - Genius, Supernatural (SFW)

Sam & Rowena - Genius by Kitty Gatsby
This is both a vid and about a rarepair so I think it fits this week's theme. The focus of the vid is Rowena, a witch, and Sam a hunter, who have a complicated enemies to friends relationship in canon. This vid is wonderfully constructed and cuts scenes in such a way that it gives the impression of something deeper is happening between them. Plus, the music is upbeat, and I think, prefect for this pairing.
(This is my first time reccing anything, and I wasn't quite sure of the formatting, so I hope this is okay)

Rectember: The Prince of the Grotto by Lang

The Prince of the Grotto by [archiveofourown.org profile] Lang
Thor/Loki, 37k. This is, if you can believe it, a Revengers-themed The Blue Castle fusion (yes, the LM Montgomery book) where Loki was raised in Jotunheim. I'm reccing it because it is a fic I reread it today for the umpteenth time. It's more straight comedy than the novel, and yet it still yanks at my heart strings, and I always cry at least twice. Loki's life as the inconvenient runtling prince of Jotunheim is such a bummer! His family is so hilariously terrible! And then he discovers he's dying of horn plague, and he figures he might as well go out and live some life.

Just a really delightful read, whether you've read the novel or I think even if you haven't, it's fun on its own. One of those things I would never have thought to want, and yet here fandom is, providing me with this gem.

Rectember is Here!

Hey, folks! Welcome to RECTEMBER, a reccing event with suggested reccing prompts! Thanks for everyone who commented on the feedback post. Thanks to your input, we’ve decided to have WEEKLY prompts. I’m going to go ahead and list them all below, but I’ll also make a weekly post to remind you of the week’s themes.

How this works:
- I post the weekly themes (three per week).
- You post recs to the comm by clicking "Post" above and selecting [community profile] recthething in the "Post to" drop down menu, or by following this link. (Note: you will need to join the comm if you haven't yet.) You can post recs for one or more of the themes each week, in one or more posts to the comm. Tag the posts with fandoms as appropriate.

That’s it! That’s all there is to it. Here are our first week's themes. Posting for Week One is now open! (Let's be real, posting is always open.)

WEEK ONE THEMES
- Vids
- Works you've enjoyed many times
- Works about rarepairs

Rest of schedule behind cut! )

FAQ:
What if I only have one rec for the theme? Is it okay to post just one rec?
Absolutely! Our whole philosophy here is The More The Merrier. You can rec just one work, or you can post a list of lots of recs.

Can I rec more than one work per theme?
Yes, please post as many as you want! If you have several for a theme, it's a good idea to put them together in one post.

Can I put all my recs for the week in one post?
Yes! You can make a post per theme, or you can put them all together, or anything in between. I don't know if you've noticed, but we're extremely chill around here about this kind of thing. :D

Do the works I rec have to fit all the themes?
Nope! You can rec that way if you want, but any work that fits any of the weekly themes counts for Rectember.

What if I have recs that don't fit any of the themes? Can I still post those in September?
Yes please!! See above re: The More The Merrier. Rectember is just meant to add a little inspiration for those that want it, but it's completely optional. As always, feel free to rec anything that fits the comm guideliness at any time.

Will we still have Community Recs Posts in September?
Yep, we'll still have a community recs post every Thursday for your regular catch-all reccing needs.

Questions? Please ask them below!

admin note: rectember brainstorming?

Hey, folks! I've been thinking about doing an event in September to encourage reccing and maybe even draw some people out of the woodwork who haven't recced anything here yet. I was thinking of some kind of daily or mostly-daily themes, so for example:

Sep 1 - rec a work you've read many times
Sep 2 - rec a work rated explicit/NC-17
etc

Would folks here enjoy doing participating in an event like this? I'm envisioning coming up with the themes in the next day and a half, publishing them all in a list on Sep 1, and then posting weekly reminders.

It would be zero-pressure - people could post for days that inspired them and skip the days that didn't. You would be posting your recs each day directly to the comm (both to increase posting at the comm and because it means less tagging work for me). You could also post several days in one post if you wanted.

Yay? Nay? Suggestions on daily themes? Suggestions for improvement?

Fanart recs: characters in traditional Korean clothing

I stumbled across some art today and got really excited and thought I'd rec it here.

Disney: Disney villains in traditional Korean clothing by [deviantart.com profile] woohnayoung

My favorites are Cruella de Vil, human!Scar, Lady Tremaine and daughters, and Gaston (+triplets). But check out the whole gallery, which also includes Simpsons characters in hanbok.

Soulcalibur: Seong Mi-na and Hong Yun-seong in traditional Korean clothing by [deviantart.com profile] xue--xue

One of my favorite artists who draws a lot of "costume porn." My favorites are these two: Tanabata and A Short Respite. Most of the art is in this gallery, although there are a few more art pieces scattered around in other galleries. Note that some other pieces the artist has done are NSFW.

Community Recs Post!

Every Thursday, we have a community recs post, like this one, where you can drop a rec or five in the comments. This works great if you only have one rec and don't want to make a whole post for it, if you don't have a DW account to make posts of your own, or if you're just shy. :)

(But don't forget, you're also welcome to post recs directly to the comm seven days a week. :D)

So, what cool fic/art/vid have we discovered this week? Drop it in the comments below! Anon comments are enabled.

Star Wars, Rogue One, Sherlock, Merlin

  1. Eclipse by SpellCleaver. "Luke and Leia, the twin children of Darth Vader and heirs to the Emperor himself, defect. When they do, it's naturally a dream come true for the Rebellion and the mother they never knew, one that's been a long time in the making." An epic length story with many a character appearance. What I particularly loved about this was that it's a gen story with an intense relationship between siblings rather than a romantic one.

  2. A late-night Welcome Home. by SleepyKalena. Fanart for Rogue One: "For context, this was a play on the Japanese dub of the Welcome Home scene. Jyn tells Cassian, "I'm always all alone when things go bad, so this feels strange." Cassian responds with "You'll get used to it soon," implying that he'll keep being there for her when things go bad, and that it won't be long until the feeling stops being foreign to her.".

  3. John Watson || Soldier by OneAllysa. I am not generally fond of dialogue in vids but this one uses the bits quite effectively to portray Sherlock's partner as the complicated individual he is, and not always a nice guy either. I like how it also reveals how it's sometimes John who establishes what will happen and how he is not always the caretaker.

  4. Art: Hope is the thing with feathers by
LFB72. A series of works for this Merlin wingfic. Aside from the striking animated Merlin, there are various beautiful watercolour images including Morgana, Aithusa, and a final close up of Merlin and Arthur, bare chested and winged.

  5. for we are a woven thread; find the strand
by shadowsong26. "The night before Obi-Wan was to leave for Utapau, he and Anakin and Padme agreed that, regardless of the Council's orders, Anakin should go as well. They split up over the course of the battle--and when Order 66 is given, they cannot find one another in the chaos; Padme, on Coruscant, is left with the knowledge that neither of them is coming back." It's rather amusing that a threesome pairing spends the entirety of the story separated until the end. But it's an enjoyable read about three people getting on with things, finding support among others, and then having their continued purpose bring their threads together once again.
