  1. 360-degree feedback. by bysine. Gen. Doctor Strange-Shang-Chi crossover where Wong is haunted by Wenwu. Fills in some blanks in an amusing way. I really enjoyed spending time with Wong and finding out more about him and Mordo.

  2. This Crude Matter by rain_sleet_snow. Gen. "In a ramshackle trading post on Jakku, Baze and Chirrut find a girl who sings with the Force, and who knows only two things for sure. One: her name is Rey. Two: her family will return for her." Loved this take on what TFA could have been, seeing the Rogue crew on a different path, and a more fulfilled childhood for Rey.

  3. Another Life by LullabyKnell. Gen. "In one moment, James T. Kirk is the acting captain of the U.S.S. Enterprise, on his way home to Earth after stopping the Narada. In the next moment, without explanation, James T. Kirk is an Academy cadet on academic probation again, barely a day before Nero will destroy Vulcan." Great read, with a few twists and some extended thoughts about what it means when everything doesn't go wrong after all.

  4. The Peter Tingle by igrockspock. Gen. Fun encounters between Yelena and Peter Parker post-Hawkeye and Spiderman No Way Home.

  5. the ship in port is the safer one (but it's not the reason it was made) by KiaraSayre. Gen. "The Enterprise's first mission is a boring one. Luckily, the ship more or less makes its own trouble, including: stills, toilet paper, lighting issues, awkward crewmembers, lunchroom seating politics, and, of course, the Admiralty."

Aside from the amusing bits, the thing I most enjoyed about this Kelvin verse story is that the problems in it seemed SO REALISTIC. This is exactly how organizations function and it's absolutely great to see it. It's the sort of story one could base a whole series around.

Every Thursday, we have a community post, just like this one, where you can drop a rec or five in the comments. This works great if you only have one rec and don't want to make a whole post for it, or if you don't have a DW account, or if you're shy. ;)

(But don't forget: you can deffo make posts of your own seven days a week. :D!)

So what cool fanvid/fic/podfic/fanarts have we discovered this week? Drop it in the comments below. Anon comment is enabled.

  1. Reprise Series by Elfpen. Star Wars first trilogy. As much as I enjoy time travel as a story type, I have found there is such a thing as too many of them. So what I really enjoyed about this one is the way it defies expectations.

So many time travel stories are fixits which focus heavily on changing key issues in a timeline. I suspect many a reader feels like Mace does, wondering when Ben will give up his secrets and set new pathways in motion. But I really enjoyed seeing that Ben himself needs help in reconciling himself to this role he's been put in, and healing the damage of the past. And I also really loved how his mission dovetailed with getting a new future in motion. An intriguing read that's all about character development and a reminder that when someone returns to the past, a new future is already in motion and extreme caution is needed.

  2. Gwen's Guide to Happiness by jules_evan (julien_avec_rien). "Gwen's fine. Well, she's okay. She could be happier, in her own opinion. But how does one go about getting happier? Fortunately, she has lots of friends to whom she can pose her question: what's the secret to happiness?" Pretty much what it says on the tin. Yet this fic was wonderfully unusual in its thoughtful approach to the question, matching points of view with the various characters, and being very true to Gwen's character as well. Also, a Merlin fic centered on Gwen! Not to be overlooked.

  3. A Chorus of Ordinary Women by kalima, Star Trek Kelvin verse exploration of how things on Hellguard might have turned out differently. Rather tough subject matter and I skipped ahead in one place, but nonetheless rewarding read with both many OCs and a lot of focus on Spock/Uhura. I think the Epilogue proves how connected one becomes to the new characters.

  4. when you wake by sevenfoxes. Captain America.MCU. Time loops are a favorite trope for me, which means I particularly appreciate it when someone does something different with it. Extended ones are a variation for longer stories but I had yet to run into one where the resets might occur at different points in time instead of the same one. It made the story more of a roads-not-traveled sort of tale than one about correcting particular mistakes. And I loved the ending.

  5. when you make it seem, enchanted by somethingaboutwriting. "In a black-and-white television show with a ridiculously small audience, Merlin reunites with his fiancé Arthur Pendragon in the 1950s. This is completely normal, and has nothing to do with how long Merlin has had to wait for the Once and Future King to return. WandaVision AU" Once I read it, it surprised me that I hadn't already thought about how perfectly the series premise would lend itself to an Arthur returns fic.

A grab bag of fanworks I've reread or rewatched so many times I've lost count. :D

* The Chav!verse series by [archiveofourown.org profile] delires (Inception (2010), Arthur/Eames, 49k across 8 stories)- An AU in which Arthur and Eames meet under naughty circumstances. I love the characterizations, how much is different vs. familiar w/r/t the canon, and it's also LOLARIOUS and sensual.

* The Anatomy of a Fall by [archiveofourown.org profile] novembersmith (Bandom RPF (My Chemical Romance), Frank/Gerard, 107k words) - Long considered one of the Bandom RPF "classics", it's easy to see why: this is a spooky and tender YA-type of story. The readers get to know the high school versions of My Chemical Romance, how they become friends, etc. By the time the Frank/Gerard angle begins to appear, readers are swept into a story that's both bigger and way more intimate than expected.

* Good by [livejournal.com profile] jarrow (Hairspray (2007))- A truly feelgood fanvid that will make you shimmy.

* Midnight Sun by Parillayoung. (The Fall TV Show) Pairings: Stella Gibson/Feminism, Stella/James Olson, Stella/Tom Anderson, Stella/Dr. Reed Smith, Unrequited Stella/Jim Burns, Stella/Danielle Ferrington, one-sided Paul Spector/Stella, Stella/Larkin, Eastwood/Common Sense (LOL).

[Content warning for this video: Lots of curse words from the v. start and also a few sexual situations.

Also, Jim Burns tries to assault Stella at 1:16 to 1:18 (she deflects the attack). Burns is shown from 1:35 to 1:36 with a bloody nose.]

One of the reasons I lurve this fanvid is that it shows the canonically bisexual character of Stella Gibson be sexual without any judgement. Sometimes there are hookups as well as potential dalliances. Occasionally, a character or two will misread Stella's interest. It's a fanvid that's honest about a female character's sexuality without having to excuse or compromise her behavior. Oh, and what a killer song!

* Fucked My Way Up by iamoverjoyed (The Fall TV show) Pairings: Stella/James Olson, one-sided Paul Spector/Stella Gibson

[Content warning for this video: Quick scene from 1:21 to 1:32 that includes a drawing of a naked woman in a submissive position and a fast shot of a bound and gagged woman on a bed. Stella Gibson drops an F-bomb at 1:31.]

This one is a bit darker than the earlier one, but it's also my faaaaave one for The Fall. Everything from the many parallels between Stella Gibson and Paul Spector to the journey they both take (as well as the price they both pay for pursuing their individual goals.) It doesn't hide from the nastiness in their realities, but it doesn't celebrate it either. Plus the editing, f/x, and song choice are such PERFECTION, I can't even.

* The Test by [archiveofourown.org profile] heresluck (Star Trek (2009), Kirk/Spock)

Let me begin by saying that I don't even go here. Anything I know about ST (TV shows and movies) is from fannish osmosis (this isn't an invitation to get recced for it, I'm just trying to state where I'm coming from.) And yet, THIS IS MY FAVE FANVID EVERRRR. It's got the K/S slash, masterful editing, layers upon layers of maintext and subtex, and a fantastic song choice. It's THE fanvid for me (even though, again, I'm not in the fandom, LOL.)
