So when I was choosing fics to rec for this theme, I wasn't paying attention to any overall themes that were occurring. But now that I have compiled the list, I have realised that they all follow the same theme, which is domestic & emotional intimacy. There's also lots of sexual intimacy but the domestic intimacy really stands out.

So if you like Steve/Bucky (because I am still on that train) and love domestic intimacy then boy, do I have a list for you.

8x Recs behind a cut because apparently I rambled on about them... )

A handful of fics I come back to again and again, from a variety of fandoms.

The Timeline of Theseus by [archiveofourown.org profile] Applea [The Magnus Archives - Elias & Jon - 80k words, WIP]

Jon travels back in time, and the Eye now has an 8 year old Avatar who doesn't realize that he has powers. Elias doesn't trust him to anyone else's supervision, so he adopts him. I've only been in TMA fandom for a few months but I've reread this like half a dozen times, at least. It's a very fun romp. (Major spoilers for TMA.)

The Moon Laughs by [archiveofourown.org profile] Lady_Origami [The Umbrella Academy - Five & The Hargreeves (but especially Klaus, Ben, and Vanya) - 94k, WIP]

Five is stuck in a timeloop, starting from the day of Reginald's funeral. I always love timeloop stuff, and this one also has delicious, delicious hurt/comfort, which is why I keep coming back.

that one catastrophe bnha youtube/buzzfeed au by [archiveofourown.org profile] Origamidragons [Boku no Hero Academia - Kaminari & Todoroki; League of Villains ensemble - 15k words across 2 fics]

Kaminari realizes Todoroki "Are you All Might's love child?" Shouto is the perfect person to make a hero conspiracy Youtube channel with. Class 1A, and later the League of Villains, come along for the ride.

Long Shadows by [archiveofourown.org profile] esama [Detroit: Become Human / Iron Man - Connor & JARVIS - 86k, complete]

Connor consults JARVIS, the first "deviant" AI, on how to handle deviants (and recalcitrant humans). Whenever I feel the itch to read Detroit: Become Human fic, I come back to this fic again (and again.)

A Helpful FAQ by [archiveofourown.org profile] Siamesa [A Song of Ice and Fire - Renly Baratheon - 5k, complete]

AU where Renly Baratheon sits on King Stannis' small council and decides to provide some helpful advice to the newest council member. Absolutely hilarious.

Hello, I love vids, so here are ten vids in ten different fandoms that I'm particularly fond of and haven't recced yet. The majority of them are at least a few years old, and most of them also fit the theme of works I've enjoyed many times.

Community: Jeff & the study group (S1-S3): Little Talks
There are so many things I can praise about this vid: the way it shows characterization through relationships so beautifully, the fantastic timing, the fact that we definitely needed a montage of Jeff's meltdowns set to the lines "don't listen to a word I say, the screams all sound the same". But the coloring is what really sets it apart for me. The way it uses black and white and vibrancy to really highlight the point is absolutely gorgeous.

Cracked: After Hours: Company of Fools
I can't resist a vid that feels like a love letter, and I feel like I can feel the love for this silly internet show and the friendship at the core of it pouring out of every second of this vid. It seems like an extremely difficult show to vid, and every beat of this is on point. It's also one of those vids where I feel like it'd be fun even if you hadn't seen the show, just because it's a happy song and an upbeat vid, but if you have, knowing what's going on in some of the chosen moments makes it even better.

Dead Like Me: Mason: There is a Boy Who Never Goes Out
This is the second vid where one of the major draws is the way it illustrates character, and character development in particular, through relationships. I really love how it highlights some of Mason's sweetest moments, and not just with the other main characters. This is one of those vidders where I could link every vid I've ever seen of theirs and probably most of the ones I haven't and you'd get something great, but this one has always stuck with me in particular. Also, the timing is great through the whole thing, but in particular that first twenty seconds or so are just so well-timed and well-done that I want to ask the vidder for their secrets.

Ginger Snaps trilogy: Brigitte & Ginger: In Another Life
Warning for canon-typical violence, blood, death. This is so gloriously done. It weaves the three movies in together so well, and the use of the third one is especially great set against the song choice. I've always loved how the song unfolds, and the vid matches that very particular momentum so well.

Hannibal: Abigail (S1): Blinding
Warning for canon-typical violence, blood, death. Speaking of songs with a very specific and particular momentum and vids that match them beautifully, this is the definitive vid to this song for me. I find both tilting shots and flickering effects can easily become a distraction instead of a benefit, but this vid uses them both perfectly -- the feeling of near-constantly slipping and moving just highlights the nightmarish, off-kilter state of Abigail's story all through the season.

Leverage: Parker: Edge of Glory
First, this is my hands-down favorite Leverage vid of all time. Second, it has one of my two favorite vid summaries of all time. ("Parker x Gravity OTP (but I mean. it's an open relationship.)") It's just a minute and a half of Parker joyously leaping off of things and generally having the time of her life, and it makes me gleeful every time I watch. The timing in this is utterly perfect, and that trailing ending in particular is one of my favorite things.

Sanctuary: Henry Foss: All Star
I am in this fandom 90% for The Five shenanigans. This vid highlights perfectly why Henry is the other 10%. This is another vidder where I could link to pretty much any single vid and you'd have gold, but this one has been a particular favorite for ages.

Sherlock: John (S1): Better Version of Me
I haven't been in Sherlock fandom for a long time, but this vid is a long-time favorite. The use of the road signs and the blinking cursor are just so good, expanding on some visually interesting things from the show itself and making it even better. Pair that with the fantastic choice of song, which works so well both lyrically and with that driving music, and it's absolutely gold.

Sports Night: Sports Analogies
(I've shared the link on this before, but I haven't recced it properly, so I say it counts.) This is the newest thing on this list, from this March, but I've already watched it at least two dozen times, because it is fantastic. There could not be a better choice of song for the show, the clips work perfectly, and every single moment of it is basically perfect. I laugh every single time.

White Collar: Diana: She's a Genius
Sometimes I just need 30 impeccably timed and colored seconds of Diana Berrigan being the biggest badass. Vids of this style were prevalent in the White Collar (and Suits, for that matter) fandom; I've always loved them, and this has always been my #1 favorite of them all.

Proof by onthecyberseas
A Carol Danvers/Maria Rambeau fanvid, about being in love no matter how far the distance between you is.

Pumped Up Kicks by Anoel
All about S1 Veronica Mars kicking ass and getting revenge.

Rockabye: A Star Wars Story by Pixie
No one in Star Wars is raised by their birth parent for various tragic reasons -- but none of them is a lack of love.

Han's Girl by roane72

These are a few vids, posted over the last year, that I have really enjoyed and rewatched many times.

Raising Hell by [archiveofourown.org profile] bingeling (Ready or Not)
I don't wanna go to Heaven without raisin' hell.

→ Just a fun vid about a woman trying to escape her murderous in-laws. You also don't need to watch the movie first to enjoy.

When You Break by [archiveofourown.org profile] sweetestdrain (Avengers)
Tell me another beautiful lie.

→ This is an amazing vid about the OG Avengers team. If you were like me, and sorely disappointed by Endgame, then this vid will make you feel better. It will also hurt in spots but it reminded me why I love these movies.

Los Ageless by [archiveofourown.org profile] sisabet (Xena)
Burn the Pages of Unwritten Memoirs

→ This is a Xena/Gabrielle vid about all the different alternate lives they had (which were delightfully hilarious at times) and how they're still soulmates in every one. A must-watch if you loved Xena & Gabrielle.

Problem by [archiveofourown.org profile] cherryice (Captain Marvel)
That girl is a problem.

→ I think the editing on this vid is amazing, worth watching even if you haven't seen the movie. The way the scenes are intercut is fantastic.

Sum of Our Parts by [archiveofourown.org profile] aurumcalendula (Bandidas)
We are, we are more than our scars.

→ Bandidas is a movie starring Salma Hayek and Penelope Cruz as two women who become bank robbers to fight injustice! Highly recommend the movie and this vid, which is a lovely overview of the movie and the women's friendship.

ladygriddlebone: Galtar and Goleeta riding Thork, from promotional artwork for "Galtar and the Golden Lance" (Galtar and Goleeta)
[personal profile] ladygriddlebone
Here are a few favorites I find myself coming back to again and again.

Fragments by [archiveofourown.org profile] LuxKen27 [InuYasha - Mir/San - 34,499 words - explicit]
This is a beautiful exploration of how Miroku and Sango's story might have played out, had they been born in the modern era instead of the Sengoku Jidai. Tons of delicious angst and tension!

Good Morning by [archiveofourown.org profile] neveralarch [Locked Tomb trilogy - Gideon & Harrow - 1,132 words]
If the author's own summary won't get you to read this gem, I don't know what will: Gideon's Guide to Doing Some Push-Ups, At Least, Have You Never Used Your Arms, Nonagesimus?

Keys to the Universe by [fanfiction.net profile] Didi [Power Rangers: MMPR, Turbo, In Space - Tommy/Kim, Jason/Trini, and some other ships - 301,282 words]
The Power Rangers from MMPR to In Space are summoned across the galaxy for an important secret mission. I can't even tell you how many times I've read this one. It's my go-to comfort read. I adore the way this author writes Jason and Trini in particular. (This story was recommended to me by a good friend as a means of luring me into the Power Rangers fandom. It worked.)

What Lurks Beneath by [fanfiction.net profile] Didi [Power Rangers: MMPR - Tommy/Kim and Jason/Trini - 66,541 words - explicit]
Another favorite by Didi, in which the Rangers must face an unexpected new foe well after they thought they were done being Power Rangers.
doranwen: female nerds, rare and precious (Default)

I don't have a lot of rarepairs to recommend, as either the fandoms are so rare that any fic for it is rare, or the rarepair fics were not my favorites for various reasons, but here's a handful of excellent ones.

[Alphas - Lee/Rachel] Six Kisses of Rachel Pirzad by Teyerin (3468 words)
At first the idea of this relationship raised my eyebrows very high - but by the time I finished reading, I was smiling at it. It's an interesting one!

[Rookie Blue - Dov/Gail] To hell with it by JadeSelena (7654 words)
A S2 fix-it for a pairing the show only used as a means of breaking up Chris/Gail. (What a waste of screen time when you could have this!)

[Rookie Blue - Dov/Gail/Chris] A Series Of (Un)fortunate Events by amathela (8290 words)
Not only are there very few fics for these three together, this fic has them as a poly vee ship, which is a rare version in the fandoms I've read so far (admittedly, I haven't seen a ton of poly ships in my favorite fandoms), with Gail as the pivot. It's all very fluffy.

[Sue Thomas F.B.Eye - Myles/Tara] WNE 1: Weekend in New England by aubreysmom (23459 words)
This fic was the one that got me to see the potential in Myles/Tara. I've seen those two that way ever since. It's not *exactly* shippy but it feels shippy enough to me, and the sequel to it is most definitely shippy. (You can find the sequel from the author's profile, but it's definitely a part 2 of 3, and they never wrote the third… This one can stand on its own.)

The rarest of rarepairs for STFBE I would share a link to (it's a Myles/Sue fic!!!), but it was only hosted on RomanticFanfiction.com (which went down years ago) and since one had to log in to read the fics there, none of them were saved in the Wayback Machine. Back in the day I painstakingly copied it into an epub to re-read (and I'm really glad I did, now), because it's super well-written. It was called Surrogate and written by JoM. Mentioning here out of honor for the rarity and the great writing.

[X-Men Original Movieverse - Scott/Ororo] Loss of Composure series by Diana / Titaniafae / Dee / viscerate (no wordcount available)
I've seen this author's stuff in at least three or four different places with a different name each time, so I'm really not sure which nick they prefer! But no matter which it is, this series is really well-done and was one of a tiny handful of fics that taught me to love Scott/Ororo. I linked to the overall fanfic page because it has the whole series all linked together there and in the correct reading order, and the fics themselves aren't linked one to each other.

Happy reading!
yuuago: (Art - Reading)

Another one that I've enjoyed again and again.... :D

Counterpoint by Kanadka is a delightful Aziraphale/Crowley fic in which these two enjoy a waltz together.

At only ~560 words, it's bite-sized, but I've re-read it several times because it's always sure to put me in a good mood. Banter! Historical setting! Lots of feelings and things left unsaid. Lovely.
doranwen: female nerds, rare and precious (Default)
[personal profile] doranwen
I can't count the number of times I've read these fics… I've got lots of favorites, but all of the ones on this list are ones I will just browse to on my hard drive (I save everything I like reading) and pull up to read, because I remember the author and title straight off, lol.

I left out anything that was a perma-WIP, or where I couldn't pick even just *one* of the many fics I love by an author. Those are better suited for a thorough recs post on another day.

Leverage )

The Lord of the Rings (books) )

The Matrix )

The Pretender )

Rizzoli & Isles )

Rookie Blue )

Smallville )

Sue Thomas F.B.Eye )

X-Men Original Movieverse )

I ended up skipping Alphas and Push entirely because as much as I enjoy re-reading fics from those fandoms, I have a lot of "I love reading these" rather than a few really strong standouts - or in the case of Alphas, I have one that I'm saving for the rarepair post I'll get to another day.

And I couldn't even *try* to come up with a list for Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman. I've read and re-read SO MANY of the fics over the years (it was one of my first fandoms) that the list would be ridiculously long. Suffice it to say, I'll have to make a recs list just for that fandom sometime. But that might be a while, lol.
sef1029: Shen Wei and Zhao Yunlan faces (Default)
[personal profile] sef1029
(All fic) These are my favorites--at least, the ones on AO3.

Syllepsis, by Paian (Stagate SG-1)
Daniel is working alone at Jack's house when Jack's ex-wife turns up. Sara recognizes the truth about Jack and Daniel's relationship immediately. Her conversations with Daniel and then Jack are beautiful and moving and cathartic. The Jack/Daniel sex that follows is gorgeously written.

Lovely and Tatters, by Martha  (The Sentinel, Stargate SG-1, Angel:The Series, Cthulhu mythos)
I don't like horror. At all. But horror by Martha is an exception, and exceptional. This series actually starts with Unsleeping, set in The Sentinel, which introduces the Lovecraftian element. But I love the SG-1, Sentinel, and Angel teams and the way they interact. Marha shows us a Daniel Jackson hurt and on the run, lets Jim and Blair come to his rescue, calls in SG-1, and then brings Angel and his team in to confront the apocalypse. The relationship between Jack and Daniel is tender and sexy, as is the relationship between Jim and Blair. The Angel team is as weird and funny and heroic as always. But the best thing about this series is the way it shows us how these very different people look to each other.

freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose, by synecdochic (Stargate Atlantis)
Post-series. John is dead. Rodney has to build a life in academia without him. He struggles, not just for a bearable life but for a meaningful way to share the lessons he has learned with his proteges. Stunningly smart, beautiful story.

September Song, by Kat Allison (Highlander)
The world is slowly sliding toward the end times. Methos visits Duncan's barge in Paris to talk and to make love in the face of apocalypse. Given our times, this cuts to the bone. Read it anyway. It's a genuine classic.

The Unvictorious Ones, by quercus (Stargate SG-1)
The Tollans ask Daniel Jackson to help assess the conditions on a planet where ethnic cleansing is reminiscent of the Cambodian horrors. Jack and Paul Davis accompany Daniel. There's a dreamy quality to this story that helps to alleviate the terrors of what the men witness. This is an idealized Daniel whom Jack deeply loves, which may be why Jack is the one who is most traumatized by their experience.

grounded, by Pares/kormantic (Stargate SG-1)
By now you need some humor. This is my favorite. It's Jack/Daniel, and it's sexy, smart, and funny. I love it.

My first proper post here so have some of the Torchwood fics I’ve read over and over, and never grown tired of.

Mostly they’re short one-shots of the fluff variety… All are hosted on livejournal.

There Is A Room That Never Stays Put by birdsflying

Summary: There is one room in The Hub that doesn't stay where it ought to.

I love this for the gentle atmosphere it creates, and for Ianto’s faith that he will be found.

Distract Them by tanarian (Crossover with Doctor Who)

Summary: Never believe the Doctor when he says it's just one trip and nothing can go wrong...

Ianto is awesome, without even realising it.

Unforeseen Risk Elements by tanarian

Summary: Ianto always worries when he gets ‘those’ calls from Jack.

Jack does some fast-talking to get himself out of trouble with Ianto.

Ghost in This Hub by jadesfire

Summary: Something's not quite right at Torchwood Three, but it's taking the team a while to get to the bottom of it.

Another Ianto-centric fic. Sort of.

It’s Business Time by lone_star_woman

Summary: Awww, yeah! Wednesday night is the night that they usually make love.

This one never fails to make me laugh. Poor Jack!

Adam by invisible_lift

Nothing to do with the episode of the same name, this six-part fic deals with what happens when Ianto is mysteriously replaced with an almost identical replica. It breaks my heart every time I read it, and yet I keep coming back to it.

I was going to do all the weekly themes in one but fanvids are kind of their own thing, so here are a bunch of my favorite fanvids for a ton of fandoms, and I'll get to the fics later.

All totally SFW as far as I know (though the Alphas and Rookie Blue ones do have some making out in them).

tomorrow, when the war began || it's a brave new world
Fantastic TWTWB movie vid to the song "This is War" by 30 Seconds to Mars. It's got some interesting coloring, nice cuts, and is way deeper if you've read the books and know what's going to happen with the different characters.

Alphas TV
An Alphas fanvid with the idea that you're watching TV and changing the channel, so there are different song choices to different parts of it. Uses songs such as "Have a Nice Day" by Bon Jovi, the Imperial March theme from Star Wars (by John Williams), and Adagio for Strings by Samuel Barber. Ranges from hilarious to heartbreaking.

Idgie and Ruth Love Story Fried Green Tomatoes (FGT)
A well-done video for Fried Green Tomatoes showing the relationship between Idgie and Ruth to Taylor Swift's Love Story.

Leave Me Hypnotized, Love [Push]
One of multiple Push fanvids made to this song (featured in the film) and focusing on Nick/Cassie.

Rizzoli & Isles - Crazy Jane
A funny Rizzoli & Isles vid to Crazy Jane by Dizzy Balloon. The song is too perfect for Jane Rizzoli, lol.

Andy McNally and Sam Swarek ~ Crash and Burn
A lovely Rookie Blue fanvid for the Andy/Sam ship to Savage Garden's Crash and Burn.

Éomer's Bootcamp (I'll Make a Man Out of You)
A very funny LOTR video to the song from Mulan. If you've seen the LOTR films and you've never seen this video, you have to change that right away. :D

LOTR - music video -Fallin
A blast from the past, this LOTR video was reposted in 2007 and made years before that, probably just after the first film came out (note that it isn't remotely hi-def; the version I have on my hdd, which is the original size, was 320x240 - best to watch from a distance if you can't shrink Youtube's version small enough). It's set to Falling by K-Otic and features the Fellowship falling over, and over, and over… :D

One Step At a Time - Women's Murder Club (Cindy)
You'll need to find a way to stretch this back to landscape somehow (download from Youtube and watch with VLC is my recommendation), but it's a great Women's Murder Club video focusing on Cindy and using Jordin Sparks' song One Step at a Time.

Lois & Clark fanvid - That's All - season 1
Very well-done Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman vid to the tune of That's All by Genesis. I particularly love all the newspaper bits.

And I posted my favorite Leverage fanvids in a comment to a community recs post earlier, but I reposted that to my own DW to save my recs, so if anyone didn't see them before, here they are.
yuuago: (SweNor - Stay)
[personal profile] yuuago
This one is both a rare pair rec and an old favourite. :D

"Beach Comber" is a Hetalia Sweden/Norway fic by Tinediserp. It's short, in ambiguously modern setting, and in two parts:
Part I (PG-rated; cozy fluff)
Part II(R-18; sex outdoors)

Links go to the author's livejournal; it unfortunately wasn't posted anywhere else.

I really like this for the cozy and relaxed relationship between these two; they're so comfortable and sweet together. The difficult times are behind them, and now they can enjoy one another's company. This author's writing is very atmospheric, and it fits really well with Sweden's POV ...Also, Part II is really hot. Or at least, I think so. ;)

Behold 6 fanvids across many fandoms featuring women being awesome and/or badass.

I purposely chose fanvids that were on the more recent side of things over what some might consider "classics". All the links go to each vidder's YouTube page. I can't recommend checking their vids enough. They're so creative and talented. :D

* Fly by suchheights is an oldish multifandom vid featuring all kinds of female characters. I still get a bit teary-eyed while watching it because it's just a celebration of women in media we all enjoy.

* Cheap Thrills by hollywoodgrrl is an amazingly edited fanvid about Carol Danvers.

* Killer women by madxthing's length might be on the shorter side of things, but wow is it an effective fanvid abt women, rage, violence, and death. TW/CW for excessive amounts of violence and blood.

* I Know What I Am by Mithborien is THE Oceans 8 fanvid for me. I love the vidder's sense of timing and the editing is on point.

* Butterflies by fray myth taken showcases the great shippiness of Xena/Gabrielle. The song choice is lovely tool.

* Come Away with Me by closetfan focuses on Northern Exposure's Marilyn as a woman who dreams and loves. Its mellow vibe always makes me smile.

Staring at the Sun by VampireNaomi is a rarepair Hetalia fic between Germany and Romano that captured me instantly, at first because Germany being with the other Italy was an interesting concept to me, but then how the story unfolded made me not want it to end because I was having so much fun with it. This story single handedly made me wish there were more fics of this pair exactly like this one because it was just that good. I think the author was especially good at charactization and forming the relationship into something believable and heartwarming. There is no flaws in the execution of the AU and details within the story sells the idea of these two really being humans living in the time period selected. Being in Romano's head was such a treat too, he was amazing from start to finish, I loved him so much! This story is just 10k+ of pure goodness and worth giving a shot if you have any interest in this fandom or these characters, whether you like the couple or not. Trust me, you'll be singing the tune of this rarepair once you're finished reading, it's impossible not to. It was posted this year, but I still think it hasn't fully gotten the attention it deserves in the amount of time it has had, so go give it love if you're interested!

Here's the summary: It's 1962. The bitter humdrum of Lovino Vargas's life is broken by the arrival of a German tourist who's running away from something.

I didn't think I was going to have anything to rec since I don't bookmark stories I enjoyed all that often, so I'm glad I can participate this early on in the event with a story I was meaning to rec for awhile. :)

This was almost a Star Wars themed reclist, but the Imperial Radch series snuck in as well.

Ancillary Justice book trailer by bironic
A beautiful space opera for anyone who enjoys sci-fi and canon characters of colour. The fancast is perfect. Made me ache for a real movie adaptation of the series.

The Mandalorian by bachaboska
Fun Poe Dameron/Mando mashup. Did a great job matching up the background settings from both sets of footage. Also did a great job making me ship it in unexpected earnest.

Kylo Ren | Look What You Made Me Do by xpunshesx
Exactly as tongue-in-cheek as the title promises. I've watched it several times and it never fails to make me giggle.

Rey & Kylo || Empty Spaces by tstudios
This is a very shippy vid. You won't enjoy it if you don't like Reylo. If you do, though, it's gorgeous and distills all their violent chemistry into just a few minutes.

Hockey RPF, gen - San Jose Sharks ensemble, vid, SFW

This is both a vid and a work I've enjoyed many times. It's a beautiful summation of the Sharks' 2018-2019 season, with all the highs and lows, and it's well worth re-watching as I felt I got a better understanding each time through of the very deliberate grouping of the clips into themes and how they're paired with the verses of the song. But more than that, it's a fanwork about the experience of being a fan—about putting your happiness in the hands of others and hoping they'll come through, what an act of trust and affection and vulnerability and loyalty that is, and how rewarding it can be. I am never tired of re-watching this.

When I binged Agent Carter recently I didn't expect to fall for a rare pair, but such is my life. When I realized there were only 11 fics for this ship, I have to admit I was surprised. That said, my spirits were lifted a lot by this fic--10K! An absolute gem of a fic. Everything I want for these three in one spot. That won't stop me from wanting more, but honestly I just reread this when I want to remember what good poly fic looks like. ♥
