Every Thursday, we have a community recs post, just like this one, where you can drop a rec or five in the comments. This works great if you only have one rec and don't want to make a whole post for it, or if you don't have a DW account to make posts of your own, or if you're shy. ;)

(But don't forget, you can deffo make posts of your own seven days a week. :D!)

So what cool fanvid/podfic/fanart/fic have we discovered this week? Leave a comment below. Anon comment is enabled.

  1. Reprise Series by Elfpen. Star Wars first trilogy. As much as I enjoy time travel as a story type, I have found there is such a thing as too many of them. So what I really enjoyed about this one is the way it defies expectations.

So many time travel stories are fixits which focus heavily on changing key issues in a timeline. I suspect many a reader feels like Mace does, wondering when Ben will give up his secrets and set new pathways in motion. But I really enjoyed seeing that Ben himself needs help in reconciling himself to this role he's been put in, and healing the damage of the past. And I also really loved how his mission dovetailed with getting a new future in motion. An intriguing read that's all about character development and a reminder that when someone returns to the past, a new future is already in motion and extreme caution is needed.

  2. Gwen's Guide to Happiness by jules_evan (julien_avec_rien). "Gwen's fine. Well, she's okay. She could be happier, in her own opinion. But how does one go about getting happier? Fortunately, she has lots of friends to whom she can pose her question: what's the secret to happiness?" Pretty much what it says on the tin. Yet this fic was wonderfully unusual in its thoughtful approach to the question, matching points of view with the various characters, and being very true to Gwen's character as well. Also, a Merlin fic centered on Gwen! Not to be overlooked.

  3. A Chorus of Ordinary Women by kalima, Star Trek Kelvin verse exploration of how things on Hellguard might have turned out differently. Rather tough subject matter and I skipped ahead in one place, but nonetheless rewarding read with both many OCs and a lot of focus on Spock/Uhura. I think the Epilogue proves how connected one becomes to the new characters.

  4. when you wake by sevenfoxes. Captain America.MCU. Time loops are a favorite trope for me, which means I particularly appreciate it when someone does something different with it. Extended ones are a variation for longer stories but I had yet to run into one where the resets might occur at different points in time instead of the same one. It made the story more of a roads-not-traveled sort of tale than one about correcting particular mistakes. And I loved the ending.

  5. when you make it seem, enchanted by somethingaboutwriting. "In a black-and-white television show with a ridiculously small audience, Merlin reunites with his fiancé Arthur Pendragon in the 1950s. This is completely normal, and has nothing to do with how long Merlin has had to wait for the Once and Future King to return. WandaVision AU" Once I read it, it surprised me that I hadn't already thought about how perfectly the series premise would lend itself to an Arthur returns fic.

All of these are fics I read in the past week and enjoyed or found interesting enough to add to my database.

My life's gotten busy enough, though, that I won't be able to make weekly posts, so I'm switching to a monthly schedule. I'll next post on one of the last weekends of August.

All of these are fics I read in the past week and enjoyed or found interesting enough to add to my database. Fewer this time because I've worked on other projects more and because most of these are NOT from AO3 or ff.n, meaning it takes time to create epubs of each one for me to save on my hard drive. So I only have Matrix fics this time.

Tales from Netheredge

"Stories set in a light fantasy world (Age of Sail + limited magic). Generally queer, generally whumpy, all angst.
Can be read in any order (mostly) see the story notes."

What to be afraid of: Heavy stuff in every story. The series deals with sexual coercion, rape & noncon, homophobia, slavery, violence and other dark things. Check the tags for each part!
Why I love it: Magic, suspense, evil empires, scary elves, relatable characters stuck in difficult situations that leave no room for perfect choices, hot/emotional/both-at-once sex... and personally for me a window into aspects of human condition I haven't considered before, so I'm thankful for that.

Bright Flame
"A ship's pillow boy tries to help a captured freedom fighter and their fates become entwined in a hopeless situation. An epic romance."
What to be afraid of: Rape, legal homophobia, torture
Why I love it: I came to call it "Brokeback Mountain but at sea". Morally grey characters and actions everywhere, unintrusive worldbuilding that leaves plenty of room for the main story, ridiculously well-structured storytelling (the symmetrical situations they end up in! the delicious angst! ahh!), a love triangle that doesn't pull cheap tricks and made me root for everyone involved.

Depravity
"Runi Assam the young High Chancellor of Bow has great plans to transform the kingdom, using the work of the Bow’s mysterious court magician, Myr. But in order to fulfil his plans Myr asks more from him than he ever expected."
What to be afraid of: Sexual coercion, rape, BDSM-verse setting closer to the end
Why I love it: MYR AND RUNI HAVE MY ENTIRE HEART. I didn't expect to want to yell from the rooftops about their dommy-subby adorableness by the end, but here I was. Especially when they start communicating, yes, god, why were you so quiet before. Runi is relatable to me with his impostor syndrome, and Myr has a subtle growth to him too as their bond evolves from lust to fondness. Also the worldbuilding continues to be stellar.

His Tribute
"Twenty years ago, the great warrior Varak saved The Genzies from something unspeakable <...>. In return, Varak was offered anything he wanted from the grateful people of The Genzies. He asked <...> that every year he be given the chance to select any 18 year old man on the islands to be one of his personal slaves.
No one expects Varak to pick out Blue as the only slave he wants to take back to his castle on Salvation this year. <...>
But everyone on The Genzies owe Varak their lives, how can they refuse him if Blue is what he wants?
" (whoa this is long)
What to be afraid of: Sex slavery, brainwashing sort of, colonialist bullcrap from the evil empire (again)
Why I love it: Honestly, don't like it as much (mental abuse stories are NOT my cup of tea and the semi-villain gets away with it soooo...). But the mystery of "how did we end up here at all??" is pretty compelling, the setting is refreshingly off the main road of the series, and the background characters are great - I rooted for them even as I continued to not understand them. The ending has gotta be intentionally referencing Ace Attorney or I'll eat my hat.

Jewel of the Harem
"A well connected whore takes a fancy to a naive young Harem Guard."
What to be afraid of: Torture, emotional manipulation, love triangle which idk felt kinda boring, MC being a bit of a plank
Why I love it: There's this guy with barely any boundaries, a mysteeerious pretty royal favourite with superpowers, and also mysteeerious clingy foreign prince with also superpowers. What can possibly go wrong, amirite? Some old characters make an appearance, and seem to be doing well which is awesome. The prince is a sad case, all things considered, and I want him to sort himself out and be happier. (Like that's gonna happen.)
NOTE: Takes place 20 years after the previous stories (which were all around the same time).

P.S. My post including a lament about how few people know it. Thx [personal profile] schneefink for suggesting this very comm in response to that!

All of these are fics I read in the past week and enjoyed or found interesting enough to add to my database. Most are Matrix, as I'm still going through all the Matrix fics to see which I want to save, but there's one each of FBI (yay for current fandoms which are actively producing fic) and Push (a fic I'd missed adding somehow).

All of these are fics I read in the past two weeks and enjoyed or found interesting enough to add to my database. From now on (for the near future, at least) I should be able to post on a weekly basis. I hope someone finds these lists useful! :)

Most of them are Matrix, but I realized I'd forgotten to thoroughly go through the tiny chunk of Speed fics on both main sites, and FBI fandom is active enough that there are a few new fics here and there. In case anyone's curious, there are 88 fics in this post and they total to 331,503 words, lol. (The joys of queries, I can pull relatively useless information such as this.)

Fic rec: there is only one thing by basketofnovas (slashmarks), written for the recent Fandom 5K exchange.

Pairing is Gideon/Harrowhark/Ianthe, rating E, length 5.2k. Canon-divergent AU + knowledge of the second book is necessary.

Author's summary: Resurrection Beast Seven stays on the original timeline, and Harrow's plan unravels anyway.

The rating isn't just for sex, though there is some of that. Author tagged for "sexy gore", and there's plenty of that in here - more of it than the actual sex; but then again, this is Locked Tomb. It's pretty hot sexy gore, and I really enjoyed the dynamic the author got at here between Ianthe and Harrow. The voice for Gideon was great too, or at least I thought so.

In general I feel like the vibe is Book 2-typical, except with some boning in addition to bones, as well as the necessary divergence to make everything fit. So if that sounds appealing, I definitely suggest reading this!
