I'm back! XD This time with Alphas fics. If you haven't seen Alphas, you really should. It's like a cross between X-Men and Heroes, but better. It's got all the team feels, has multiple PoCs in main roles, and an autistic character who's an integral part of the team (and is an excellent portrayal). The only downside is the massive cliffhanger the show ends on - but it's totally still worth it, I promise.

As always, ratings are all converted to a single system for convenience:
Fanfiction.net - G through R
AO3 - PG through X (though the occasional child-friendly fic I mark G)
anything without a rating (AO3 or other site) - Unrated

EDIT: With some help from a very SQL-knowledgeable friend (and a LOT of tinkering on my own), I've managed to pull the list of all the ships I thought were major. If there are any minor/background ships you want to avoid, please leave a comment and ask for a list to be made for you. (Chars in ships are in whatever order I happened to think of when I created the ship, so it doesn't match AO3 order necessarily.)

Alphas fics ahoy! )

If any of the links above no longer work, please let me know so I can flag them as "Dead" in my database, thanks!

Enjoy! :)

So when I posted the other week all of the fics I thought were exceptionally well-written (but not my favorites), a comment thread made me think - why not post a list of all the fics in the database that I haven't flagged as either favorite or exceptionally well-written? There are too many to go in one post, so I'm starting with all of the Matrix fic that I have in there so far. (Please note that I am NOT done adding Matrix fic - there's a lot more out there I haven't gone through yet!) I finished doing a further edit of the database for some new themes and separating major vs. minor characters, and now that I'm done I'm celebrating by posting. :D

In the process of doing the last edit, I found another Matrix fic I added to the very well-written fic list post from last time.

Note that the fics in this list range from quite good to less so, as far as writing goes, but even the latter were interesting enough to read through once. YMMV as far as each individual fic goes (you might think some of these belonged in my last post, and others you might wonder why I even bothered to read them). However, this list does represent some weeding out of the worst sludge so it'll save you the trouble of browsing through both sites in search of some good fics. :) (Though some fics aren't here just because I didn't care for the pairing or other content, so please don't take absence of any fic on any of my lists as a denigration of the fic itself.)

All of these fics are either marked complete or appear to be complete (the option for completeness was added to ff.n several years after the Matrix films came out, so the majority of the fics were never updated to reflect that). I'll save WIPs for a different post another day.

Multi-author fics can be found under the first author's name alphabetically, with the second name following it, separated by a comma. Thus a fic written by both Scottishlass and Centaur is found under "Centaur, Scottishlass".

As always, ratings are all converted to a single system for convenience:
Fanfiction.net - G through R
AO3 - PG through X (though the occasional child-friendly fic I mark G)
anything without a rating (AO3 or other site) - Unrated

Two fics for Good Omens! Both are epistolary stories written for the recent Unsent Letters exchange.

1. Immortal Beloved by mechanicaljewel. 3k length, rated T, Aziraphale/Crowley. *This one is tagged for both book and tv series; it could fit either.

Author's summary: With Crowley unavailable for most of the 19th century, Aziraphale unwittingly collects pieces of a feeling it will take him even longer to put together.

2. Tokens of Esteem by MiraMira. 1.3k length, rated T, Aziraphale & Crowley (author's tags suggest it can be taken as / if you like). Set from 2600 BC to present day. *Tagged as book fic only.

Author's summary: Eternity would be torture without someone to talk to - or without a few thoughtful surprises along the way.

I've been on tenterhooks waiting for this strikingly beautiful story to reach its conclusion. Kalima gives life to the community of Vulcan women who were abducted by Romulans--the mothers of children like Saavik. The writing is gorgeous, the characterization is wonderful, the deft hand with dark and difficult themes is inspiring. All our old favorites (including both Spocks) have roles, but, appropriately, it's the ordinary women who will stay with you afterward. Don't miss this one.

Author: Kalima
Title: A Chorus of Ordinary Women
Fandom: Star Trek: AOS
Words: 72,000
Rating: Teen

Every Thursday, we have a community recs post, just like this one, where you can drop a rec or five in the comments. This works great if you only have one rec and don't want to make a whole post for it, or if you don't have a DW account to make posts of your own, or if you're shy. ;)

(But don't forget, you can most deffo makes posts seven days a week. :D!)

  1. Fools of Us All story by adelagia, read by FayJay. Although I enjoy podfic I tend to have few listening hours, so some have been sitting on my computer for some time. I cringed at the idea that this one might no longer be available. An amusing Merlin/Arthur story, it goes straight into hilarious thanks to FayJay's performance of it. An absolute delight, it's a perfect exhibit of why podfic can make a story truly memorable.

The fact that a number of podfics were lost after a site hack is bad enough, but when I couldn't at first track this one down, it's particularly criminal that so many such fanworks have been lost.

  2. gangster AU/suits and baddass by nancymerthurslover. Aside from great looks, I am particularly thrilled to see fanart including Lancelot and Gwaine as well as Merlin and Arthur.

  3. Explorer by RainbowLily. The wonderful expression of awe on Joann's face really grabbed me. ST: Discovery fanart.

  4. Rodney and John by the Water by Luluxa. I love their expressions and the tone of the artwork. SGA fanart.

  5. The Living and the Dead by Downey Stark. I'd been wondering for some time why there weren't a slew of constructed reality vids between Merlin and The Living and the Dead (or even Damien and Merlin for that matter). The setup is perfect for a haunted Merlin and a returning Arthur. But at least one person has, and demonstrates the various possibilities for this crossover.

  6. conjure magic lightsaber by clanofsuns. Lovely fan art of how Luke and Grogu might battle together.

Reccing a fun original xianxia work that was written for the 2021 Gen Freeform exchange!

Honour Under Heaven by Platinum_Firebird.

Details: Gen, 13+ for violence, length just under 20k.

The focus is on a mentor & protege relationship and the bond that develops between them over time. If you like older female mentors, this might be one to take a look at! There's also action/adventure in there, and some emotional hurt/comfort.

Author's summary: Rescued from his overbearing, abusive father after his beloved elder brother's death, Song Jing travels the land with his new mentor, famed rogue cultivator Kai-Ji. Together they face whatever comes their way, seeing the best and worst of what the world has to offer.

Kai-Ji is like a giant in Song Jing's mind, a figure who embodies everything he aspires to be; he never imagines they could grow close. Kai-Ji is so used to being by herself, a lone wanderer on a hard road; she has trouble imagining that Song Jing will stay long by her side.

As it turns out, both of them will be surprised.

Really hope those of you who check it out will enjoy it as much as I did! :D

So I realized the other day that all those rec posts I posted back in September… only featured fics I had marked as favorites (ones I'd like to re-read). That actually is not the same thing as well-written fics, as I have some I like that I have to admit aren't very well-written, and there are very well-written fics that just don't appeal to me for whatever reason. (I liked them enough to read through them and save them, it just means I probably won't re-read them very much if at all.) I went through my fanfic database and added a separate marking for the ones that I thought were very well-written, whether or not they were on my favorites lists. These had to strike me as exceptionally well-written, not just decent. You may disagree with my choices, and that's fine. :) But you can rest assured that any on this list are not riddled with SPAG errors, and show a good command of the English language, even if the style isn't always your thing.

I created a query of just the ones that were very well-written but NOT on my favorites list, for whatever reason, and I wanted to showcase them here. Just because they're not something I want to re-read a bunch doesn't mean they shouldn't be noticed and appreciated by someone, and hopefully one of these will appeal to you! Please kudos/comment as you feel comfortable doing for them, and enjoy! (Most of these are pretty tiny fandoms, but that's a function of what I've got in my database so far.)

Most of these I don't recall off the top of my head what they are about in order to describe them, but I put what notes I do remember. If you need a recs list that's more tailored (to avoid a particular theme or whatnot), please let me know - one of the major bonuses of using a database is that I can create all manner of queries to select just what I want.

Ratings are taken from the fics themselves and adapted to a combined rating system in my database, with ff.n fics getting G through R, and AO3 fics getting G/PG to X. AO3 fics and those on blogs without ratings are marked Unrated.

  • No Fandom - (Everything is cake)
  • Octopus Steals My Video Camera and Swims off with It While It's Recording (Short Film)

So, hear me out, the sitcom nature of TBBT combined with the sci-fi/apocalypse potential of characters like "scientist who cuts up brains," "theoretical physicist with a sense of hubris," and "the it-girl who can gut a fish and shoot a gun," is like, the perfect brew.

One rec for a Magnus Archives fic that I've re-read several times since it was posted:
The Devil You Know by Gazimon. Pairing is Michael Distortion/Jon Sims, rating M, length 2.3k. Canon-divergent from ep 101. Note: archive-locked; you'll have to log in to Ao3 to read.

Author's summary: A month trapped in the wax museum, and Michael is the closest thing to rescue he can hope for. He follows it through its door.

The author tagged for "Spiral-typical mindfuckery", and boy, does this fic ever have that. (As well as the usual gore-ish stuff that you get when one half of the pairing has knife fingers.)

It's just so creepy and unsettling and weird and wrong, but in a very sexy way. Or at least it's hot if this particular flavour of creepy and unsettling and weird is your thing. And I felt that the author did a good job with the horror element of it in general, too.
