Every Thursday, we have a community recs post, like this one, where you can drop a rec or two in the comments. This works great if you only have one rec and you don't want to make a post for it, or if you don't have a DW account to make posts of your own, or if you're shy. :)

(But don't forget, you're welcomed to post recs to the comm seven days a week. :D)

So I have finally gotten around to posting monthly recs in my journal of things I have enjoyed recently. Hopefully this is a pattern that continues. This month I have recs for the following:
  • 1 x Captain America fics

  • 10 x The Old Guard fics

  • 2 x Vids

Click for recs!

Art rec: Autopsy by zeroannat at Tumblr.

Artist's description: Inspired by the parallel in Episode 1 (Young’s autopsy/Collins breaking the ice stuck in Erebus’ rudder). Vague reverse Y incision inspired by Goodsir’s botched autopsy job on John Hartnell.

I've always found that part of ep01 so chilling because of the way that scene is presented, so it was really cool to come across this very neat art that combines the two actions into one.

In light of the Supernatural finale, I have put together a bunch of vid recs in my journal. Click through for 31 vids, all from the early seasons of Supernatural. I may have personally lost interest in the show but I still enjoy rewatching the fanvids. I remember those years being a delightful time for vidding, so thank you to all the vidders who not only made the vids I enjoyed watching but also who inspired me to keep vidding myself.

The Pity War Distilled by reine_des_corbeaux. Fic is a crossover: 1917 x The Magnus Archives (MAG 7 specifically).
Length 1.3k; rated T; gen.

Author's summary: William Schofield meets the War.

...Which is pretty self-explanatory.

Familiarity with TMA is useful but not required - I think there's enough context provided that someone who's seen 1917 but not listened to the podcast would be able to follow this, as long as the idea of War personified is something they enjoy reading about.

It's a creepy, moody, atmospheric read.

  1. The Adventure of the Displaced Watcher by antennapedia. "An accident with a magical artifact sends Giles into the past. Can the specialist in hopeless cases help him before the artifact is lost and he is forever stranded?" Delightful story of Giles during Buffy S5 enlisting England's only consulting detective in the hunt, told in the form of both Watson's and his watcher's diary.

  2. Do Nothing; But Trust Your Bird To Fly by Chibihaku. "When Arthur was eight, he met a boy with golden eyes and a penchant for mischief. When he was fourteen, he met a man with a bird on his arm, and a tattoo on his thigh. When he was twenty, he watched Merlin make a whirlwind and lie about it." I really loved the central metaphor of this story and getting a glimpse into Arthur's childhood and adolescence. I also liked the compromise of the ending, which seemed to me a particularly likely outcome had this happened in canon.

  3. Serenity, Nevada by ChristinaK. "Oz's summer road trip takes him to a sleepy little town in Nevada- one that just woke up with a big new problem, and the local sheriff and citizens may have to face a reality they never expected before the closing credits." Flawless crossover with Firefly, whose characters have been transposed to a western town in postseries Buffy's timeline.

  4. Someday by seekingferret. "If we're gonna make it, things are gonna have to change." MCU vid with serious 2020 energy. State violence, the penal system, natural and unnatural disasters, political corruption, and all the everyday people.

  5. Tempt My Trouble by AurumCalendula. "'We're not friends/ And we're not lovers/ We're just trouble'" Wow, great song for Eve and Oksana but also just a wonderful capsule of what makes Killing Eve sing.

Fanart rec: Castiel in Slovak folk clothing by Ravennie at tumblr.

According to artist's description, it's pretty easy to mix up SNP (slovenského národního povstání - Slovak national uprising) with SPN (Supernatural). So obviously this called for Slovak!Castiel. :D

The artist's description doesn't mention, but he's wearing Detva kroj specifically.

  1. Pilots Get It Up Faster by flawedamythyst. Delightful ficlet suggesting how Tony Stark and Cabin Pressure's pilots might have crossed paths.

  2. Playing the Field by this_is_kelly. "Arthur is the star player for Chicago's professional football team. Merlin is on the coaching staff in Montreal. A chance meet-up turns into a one-night stand, but one night ends up not being enough and now they're both in over their heads." I tend to like sports AU stories which is why I downloaded this, but the genre seemed to be chosen mostly for its roadblocks than to explore anything about it. But I was delighted by what it did do. Given their situation, this relationship seemed to develop very realistically given who both of them would be, and it did so in an unsentimental way, which I really appreciate and wish I saw more often.

  3. Star Trek Discovery in the 32nd Century (Buck Rogers Mash-Up) by shyaporn. As described, and a bit of fun for anyone who ever saw both shows.

  4. Bounty by The_Alias (Artemis_Day). "When Jane discovered the secret to harnessing wormholes, the most she expected was a few prestigious prizes and maybe some extra grant money. She did not expect to become the target of a persistent and enigmatic bounty hunter." Aside from a particularly funny moment with Darcy, this fic is just an ongoing battle of wits, which is my favorite way of spending time with Loki and Jane Foster.

  5. It's Still Science Fiction to Me by azurish. "From clones to spaceships to time travel, and silly special effects to cutting edge technology, it’s all part of the genre we love." Truly impressive list of shows and movies included for a genre fan squee fest.

So, Chartini posted this eye-searingly bright Hetalia Romania fanart over at her tumblr, and I thought it was so damn cool, I just had to share it here. Her style is typically bright and fun, and here all of that is turned up to eleven.

Apparently this fanart is from a Magnus Archives AU; I'm unfamiliar with that series, but even without knowing anything about the context, it's still a super cool visual treat. Take a look if you like trippy art and/or mild body horror.

Hey all! First, I just want to give a huge shout out to everyone who participated in Rectember. Thank you to all the people who recced, the people who commented on the recs posts, and the people who followed the recs and found new fanworks to enjoy. If you didn't get around to posting all the recs you intended, never fear, themed recs are always welcome to be posted to the comm at any time, no excuse necessary. :) And if you want to look at the themes again, you can find them all here.

I'm just really pleased to see so many folks get a little more comfortable with posting recs here. I saw a lot of new names, yay. Now that you're in the habit, feel free to post recs to the comm anytime. ;) If you have a theme of your own or just a single rec to share, you are always welcome to post them to the comm!

I will probably do a pop-up recs week every few months, just for something different. If you really liked that style of reccing and would like to do it more often, you should check out [community profile] fancake, a reccing comm that has a theme every month.
